Safe route Palm Springs via Joshua Tree to Laughlin

Hi,

we will be on a road trip in early August. On our way to Grand Canyon, we are going to spend a night in Palm Springs. We have planned to see a bit of Joshua Tree NP (just driving through it) on our way to Laughlin. We won´t be able to leave Palm Springs very early that day, maybe at about 9:30. I know it will be incredibly hot and I am a bit concerned... we don´t want to end with a broken car and no chance to use the cell phone.

Should we skip the drive through Joshua Tree altogether?

And what would be the best route to Laughlin? The shortest route seems to be via Amboy Road, but probably not the safest. Would it be fine to drive 62 and 95?

No reason to skip JTNP.You can easily drive thru in a car with a/c or get out and look around.

You really only have a couple options from JTNP to Laughlin.

Amboy Road to Amboy (fuel in Amboy if desperate) and catch I-40. Not sure why people fear this route, its no more desolate than hwy 62.

Hwy 62 once past 29 Palms has no services until you get to Vidal Junction which is around 90 miles or so.You will pass hwy 177 which comes in from I-10, which is another route to avoid all the traffic lights on 62 from Yucca Valley to 29 Palms.

You will most likely see quite a few people pulling boats to the Colorado River on hwy 62. It is one of the main routes to Parker and Havasu. And it is patrolled by the highway patrol. It's not like you are completely alone out there.

You're going to be in the desert, you might as well see something. In the parts of the desert where there's no cell service, if you break down, someone will stop to see if you're okay. Make sure you have some water in the car, is all.

10 east to Cottonwood Canyon (exit 168), left off exit.

Drive through Joshua Tree NP (must pay $$).

Road will end at the Pinto Wye (stop sign). Turn right on Park Blvd.

Exit the park and continue across Hwy 62 on Utah Trail.

Go 2 miles and turn right on Amboy Rd.

Go 40 miles (or so) and at the end, turn right on Route 66.

Go a few miles and make a left on Kelbaker Rd.

Turn right onto I-40 east.

Then you have three choices: US-95 north to NV-163 east, or the River Road Cutoff to Needles Hwy, or AZ-95 north through Bullhead City and take the Bullhead bridge back into Nevada.

You'll be fine. Have a full tank of fuel when you leave Palm Springs. If you get hungry, Twentynine Palms has restaurants, or if you go to the main park entrance in Joshua Tree, Pie for the People is excellent pizza.
