what type of waterproof pants

I'm looking for thoughts on what kind of pants are needed for Antarctica, when we are off the ship on the zodiac, kayaking and exploring? I've read different things and am looking for more feedback. I know to start with a base layer and then a mid-layer for warmth. But of the outer layer, should it be rain pants (no warmth) or snow pants (with warmth)? Any insight on what to wear, especially for the pants, is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi,

I havent been to Antarctica before ( december will be my first time ) but i have been to the Arctic circle and I have done lots of cold weather skiing. No.1 - you need the outer layer of pants to be waterproof. Underneath, doesnt matter so much - just mix and match what you need for warmth. One of my pants will be just a rain pant with my fluffy leggings on underneath - this I will do when i've got a handle on how cold I might be. If its really cold for me padded ski pants are a useful pant, but not as flexible to walk and sit in and frankly quite annoying . However my most favourite type of pants are soft shell 'adventure' pants - mid-weight and able to put a layer on underneath. I use this combo all the time when i'm out in the field photographing wildlife etc and i can move and sit and keep a dry bum when sitting on the ground. hope these thoughts help.
