What is the best route to take when traveling from Washington dc? Which airport should we fly into ? Which carrier as the best rates? When we arrive we would like to rent a car. Any recommendations?

I cannot tell about the flights from the US, perhaps try something like Skyscanner to find what you are looking for.

I find that the most convenient is to fly into Paris CDG airport and then take the direct train from the airport station to Narbonne. Car rentals are very close to Narbonne station. Driving out of Narbonne to Gruissan you follow the blue signs leading you to the motorway.

Depending on which airline, there would also be possibilities to take onward flights from CDG or Orly to Toulouse, Perpignan or Montpellier - Perpignan being the closest at around 75 km from Gruissan.

When searching, make sure that you do not have to change airports in Paris.

There are also low cost carriers to airports like Carcassonne and Béziers, but I think those may be a lot less convenient and the frequency of these flights depends on what time of year.

my first thought would be to fly IAD dulles to either CDG paris or BCN barcelona spain then take train to your destination fares to bordeau or marseilles are usually more expensive. for car look at offers at autoeurope

Personally I wouldn't bother with the train.

The best way to fly into this area from Washington is to fly either to Toulouse (which is 180km from Gruissan) or Montpellier (110km). As far as I can see from a quick search on Skyscanner there are no direct flights, so you would change in Paris, Brussels, London or some other European hub, but the prices are not too bad. To get the best prices, I suggest using Skyscanner: just input the dates of your trip.

Similarly, on car hire, for the best rental rates, search using one of the sites like holidayautos.com, travelsupermarket or carhiremarket. It is also worth pre-buying car excess insurance - much cheaper than that which will be offered by the car hire company.

I hope this helps. If you need more advice, let me know.

The best way to get to this area is to fly to Toulouse. You can get there from any of the European gateways then you can rent a car or take the train.

I fly to Toulouse from Boston either through Madrid or London, but you can do it through most of the European gateways depending on the airline you fly on.
