Are all the beaches at a walking distance?

Hi everybody! We are visiting a friend close to Sao Martinho. She can drive us to the beach and back. Can we reach all the good beaches from town or is it better to rent a car?

Take a look at this satellite view of the town and its beaches.

If you will be actually in the town, you don't need a car to get to the beaches. If you are 2 or 3km outside and that's too far to walk, a car is an idea but parking can be difficult. There are a few buses in summer.

close to Sao Martinho- where? Only that way we can really give a correct answer.

As you can see on the above link the small town is on the beach and the beach has a few kms of lenght and there's a road going almost all the way around the bay, so all depends if you want to stay in the beach in front of the small town or a bit further away...

Thank you for your reply! We'll be staying with a friend who can drive us to Sao Martinho, but we don't want to bother her more than necessary. We may want to go to beaches a bit out of the bustle of town, where water and sand may be a bit cleaner. Is it like that? And can we reach them on foot from the city centre?

Well, if you are willing to walk 2kms or so to the beach that is OK ,but further away you will probably need a car/lift. Once in the town the beach is there and you can also walk to the beach at Salir do Porto in about 25 mins. The beaches outside the town Praia da Gralha and Praia de Salgados you wouldn't be able to walk to.

If you can give us more details of the place you are staying it would be helpful.

Water and sand will be clean virtually everywhere. São Martinho do Porto is a EU blue flag beach for many years and was awarded that distinction again in 2018, which is only possible if the quality of the water, the cleanliness and available services are all ok. The beach is right in town, your friend can leave you in the waterfront. São Martinho lies in a bay which almost seems like a lagoon, with shallow and calm waters. Most of the bay is encircled by a sandy beach, stretching for 2 or 3 km in length, so walking distance even if you want to get away from the crowd. Any beaches other than those, like Salgado, to the north, and Foz do Arelho, to the south, are not in the immediate vicinity and are too far to walk to. These are nice pretty beaches, with the waves usually absent in São Martinho, but they are also more prone to strong ocean breezes and the water is usually colder there,

Wow! Thank you. We are visiting a friend in the countryside. We have no clue as to the quality of water, so I am veeeery happy to hear that the beach has a blue flag. Thank you again! Can't wait to be there on Monday..
