I am a Stage 4 Terminal Cancer Patient who is travelling back and forth between Belfast and London for Palliative Treatment to prolong my life.
Yesterday I was shouted at, abused, threatened, accused of swearing at staff and told by the Security Guard that unless I dropped the "attitude" he would not search my bag “delay me for 4 hours and make me miss my flight.” A highly unwarranted and uncalled for act of abuse on a Cancer Patient. An utter disgrace.
All in the open hall of the security section of Terminal 5 at Heathrow in public.
All passengers had already been corralled into the tiny crowded airless snaking spaces that are the “security” lines in highly inadequate Terminal 5. We stood waiting patiently for 25 mins shuffling along. No seats. No way to getting out of the queue. No one to help. If you are old, inform, with children, unwell. Tough. My queue was moving at a snail’s pace.
I finally got through a scanner. My handbag was placed on the extra conveyor for further checks.
I approached after seeing it was in a long queue and said I could not stand. “Take a seat was shouted at me.” I waited a further 20 mins watching the Security Staff slug like progression. The man allegedly working was being told even by his colleagues to hurry up. Roll it on. Come on. I saw him check 2 bags in 20 mins.
Then there was a shift change. The staff left. One lady took over. I pointed out that I was in danger of missing my flight. They moved my bag to another queue. No seat.
My “attitutude” was that I sat on the floor as I was by this time unable to stand.
The first thing the Indian gentlemen who was supposed to check my bag said to me was that I needed to “drop the attitutude”. Apparently getting off the floor and pointing out that you have Cancer and have been waiting and can no longer stand is “attitude.”
He then said that if I didn’t drop the attitude he was going “make me wait 4 hours to check my bag and make me miss my plane.” He then said this is your “fault” you have left liquid in your bag. I said as a frequent flyer that was unlikely as I was very aware of the rules.
At that point I did get attitude. I said that was unacceptable and he had two choices. Check my bag now or get his supervisor. He got his supervisor.
The supervisor, another Asian Gentlemen, came back very quickly and clearly came in hot and bothered with a very bad attitude. The first thing he said to me was that “you cannot swear at my staff.”
Luckily for me a random middle aged American lady was standing beside me. She quietly looked at me looked at him and said to him “Sir this lady has not sworn at your staff and nor have your staff sworn at her. This is not acceptable.”
He once again threatened me with not checking my luggage. I said that I was a Lawyer and happy would deal with that if he threatened me again. I asked him in a very patronizing way if I asked the “nice man terribly nicely could he possibly do his job ? Please Thank you and how lovely.” If you act like a petulant child perhaps its best to treat them like one. That seemed to work. The petulant rude aggressive unpleasant unhelpful man actually did what he is meant to do. Check my bag.
My bad did not have any extra liquid. All 100ml samples in a clear bag as asked. No apology was given.
My bag was checked. The American lady and myself just stood there incredulously. She was nearly as shocked by their behavior as I was.
My flight was of course late. It is Bloody Awful Airlines. 7 out of my flights are late. They lose my luggage so often I now use sendmybag.com Find an alternative truly a disgrace. Take you hard earned money else where.
