Beautiful, historic home with great service

Review of Soulton Hall
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 22 Jun 2021
I have stayed at this beautiful property twice. The first visit, I stayed in the modern refurbished saddlery - a perfect place for a getaway, with clean, comfortable bedding and an excellent shower! The second visit I stayed in the grand house itself - this is a real treat, with rooms full of character and history. The dining room is stunning, and the views from the room of rural Shropshire were pitcuresque. I'd highly recommend visiting this hidden gem in Shropshire - charming, atmospheric and great service!

Terrible time. I just wish I had told them face to face. The place is nothing like the video just 2 public rooms open, which have been stripped to bare essentials. The bedroom was awful, bedding looked like it was from 2nd hand shop. The bathroom was pathetic The food at dinner was awful, and the portion so meagre it was unbelievable. Next day was even worse, breakfast was a farce, never before have I had ONE 3/4" button mushroom for my mushroom request and the bacon was a disgrace. On return from a very hot day our we found the room had not been serviced ( a covid restriction apparently) unfortunately this was one rule they forgot to mention. So no cup of tea, and worse still we couldn't open the shower so no cooling off either. We sacrificed the rest of our stay, and bolted for home. No refund for unused nights and breakfast tho' Never have I felt the this need to do a review, but these people need a wakeup call, and the video taking down. it's false advertising.

Room tip: No rooms are good at the moment I would think if our is an example.

This was booked as a romantic get away. This hotel was chosen because of it’s period style (we love old, quaint places). The room was old, but not the old you’d expect!

There were cobwebs that had been there for months, the toilet was rusted, there were cracks all round the walls and the lampshade looked like it belonged in Alice in Wonderland!

We had originally booked a meal with our stay which was cancelled due to COVID. Instead we were told we could have a ‘supper’. When asked (through email and 3 separate phone calls) what ‘supper’ entailed we were were ignored and told they couldn’t cater to us because of COVID. Luckily we found somewhere else to eat, only to return to walk through the dining room where a dinner party was being catered for with a six course meal!! So much for COVID stopping food service!

Dirty place, not at all like the pictures and poor customer service. I would advise you to keep your money to spend elsewhere!

A stunning building and charming hosts added to this exceptional stay. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, with an array of birds right outside your window, and a selection of outdoor theatre shows in the walled garden - this hotel is an absolute delight and I wish I could have stayed for longer.

What a fascinating place this is steeped in so much history. The hosts were very friendly and welcoming. Cooked breakfast was good. This was served in a separate building away from the main house. Dinner was again good, with all produce sourced
from the farm. We were fortunate to have a great table looking out into the meadows (dinner was £38.50 per person). Other guests shared a long table as you enter from the main entrance.

We stayed on the Twynihio room with the iron bed frame tastefully decorated. Very quirky!

The bathroom however, is in need of a serious upgrade. This consisted of a hand shower connected to the bathroom taps (it did look like something from the 70's ) and an old carpet that had seen better days.

We enjoyed our time at a cost of £158 a night for bed and breakfast. It was an interesting place even though there wasn't any real facilities. The walk across the road to view the barrow was interesting. All in all, a very peaceful place.

Room tip: Compare them all and bathrooms/

Soulton Hall from the outside is very impressive. A beautiful building with a rich history. Sadly the glory of the building ends when you enter. The building itself feels like it was last decorated in the 1970’s, with tired decorations and furniture. The rooms were fine and functional but for the price, when compared to nearby residencies, my wife and I expected to be a little more wow’d.

The hotel is located on a working farm which acts as a juxtaposition compared to what is meant to be a luxury hotel.

It also should be noted that noise carries very easily throughout this old building. There was a dinner party being conducted on the ground floor where we could here constant voices and plates rattling. Thankfully the dining party finished at midnight otherwise it would have been a sleepless night.

We were attending a wedding the next day and hoped to watch a little TV before bed. Sadly there was no arial, and when asked the staff about a replacement, ultimately no one came to the room to fix this for us. In the morning this was brushed off as “oh sorry we forgot, we’ll get this in for the next guests”.

When we next return to the area we will be choosing to stay somewhere else.
