Reviewed 22 February 2010

My wife, toddler and mother-in-law stayed at the Ganiba Onsen for two nights in February 2010. Getting to the ryokan was surprisingly easy - we took the Komachi Shinkansen from Tokyo Station and were at Tazawa-ko station three hours later. A bus that takes 45-50 minutes then took us from the station almost directly (100 m away) to a stop right by the hotel; it is the final stop, Nyuto-Onsen (for other families, there is ample storage for luggage underneath the bus). The area I'm sure is very nice in other seasons, but it was a magical winter wonderland as we approached the hotel. If you let the hotel know in advance, they will pick you up.

We were shown directly to our room, which was very pleasant, overlooking the courtyard of the hotel. We immediately made for the outdoor rotenburo, which was spectacularly placed in a wooded valley near a brook - I couldn't have imagined a more bucolic and relaxing setting. The water was a nice temperature and mildly and comfortably sulphuric. It is mixed sex bathing, but the other indoor baths are segregated, and when we were there there was not a lot of foot traffic so we were able to enjoy the experience without too much consternation!:)

The indoor stone bath is nice but a little bit small. The cedar wood bath however, was actually my favorite. It was large, spacious, and had a very nice woodland view, very relaxing.

The food was excellent and amazing, with the first night a lot of excellent side dishes accompanying some Akita kiritanpo. Breakfast was equally excellent and well provisioned, I was more than full after both meals. All meals are taken in the common dining room at the appointed time. Our only embarrassment was our sometimes uncooperative toddler!

Overall, it was a wonderful experience.
