Lovely atmosphere. A great end to a day's walk. Easy to get to by bus for non walkers. Includes a very informative Heritage centre near by and an office of the ever so helpful Kumano Travel Service. Lockers were backpacks can be stored close by.

We walked 4 days from spiritual centre of Koyasan to this spiritual centre in Hongu and it was wonderful. Great to reach here and sense the deep importance of this great shrine.

We visited all three of the Kumano shrines, and although this one was very nice, it was the least appealing due to the high number of people there at the time of our visit, especially after having just walked the Kumano Kodo in complete solitude. It's easily accessible to tour group buses, a couple of which were there at the same time as us.
The soba shop near the carpark was a perfect place for lunch, but the modern shop for tourists was possibly a little too developed for a rural area, implying the large number of tour buses that visit.
