En route from Santander to Cascais in Portugal stopped overnight here. You will never come across this place by accident, it has to be by word of mouth or as we did it, on the net. What a gem of a place! It seems to be in the middle of nowhere and is nothing less than a retreat. A beautiful hotel, not small, clean and full of old character with statues of bulls and bull heads on walls so must be linked to a bull fighter you would think, function room after function room seemingly being unused at every corner and beautifully kept grounds. Waiters in lovely tunics, a lovely outside restaurant area, very cheap to eat and drink surprisingly, two pools, lovely bedroom with two double beds together and a lovely English breakfast and all for 43 euros for bed only with 13 euros additional for breakfast!! Thankfully pets are not allowed in hotel, as it should be! Was a lovely experience that came out of nowhere and hope to stay again if travelling through Spain.

We made a reservation for the Conde Rodrigo in November last year 8 months in advance of our stay which included our small 6kg dog. The hotel advertises pets welcome.
5 days before our trip the hotel contacted us to remind us of our booking and stated for the first time that our dog would not be allowed inside the hotel but there was a kennel available in the hotel grounds. This was not acceptable and we cancelled the booking forcing us at late notice to have to book elsewhere at extra cost, throwing our plans somewhat into the air.
Nice one Conde Rodrigo 11.
won't be recommending you to anyone

If you are just passing through the area, this out-of-town hotel is good for an overnight (although it is bizarrely signed from the main road as simply "Hotel"). It has well-kept gounds and a nice pool (unheated - summer only). The rooms are excellent - large, clean, comfortable beds and nice bathroom (note that the only English programme on the TV is BBC World). The staff are generally pleasant and the receptionist said she speaks English (not tested - we speak fluent Spanish). Public rooms are a bit dated, with lots of wood and stuffed bulls' heads on the walls. The disappointing aspect was the food, which was at best mediocre. There were few regional offerings on the dinner menu, and they have the bizarre mediterranean way of ruining a good red wine by serving it chilled. That said, outodoor dining was pleasant and we (the only 2 diners) were nicely entertained by a good duo (keyboard, and violin/vocals). Breakfast was mostly sweet - breads, cakes, rice pudding - with a bit of unappetising cheese and ham. Both at dinner and breakfast, the bread rolls were like cannonballs.
