We have visited Pampaneira on many occasions and it is undoubtedly one of the most attractive of the High Alpujarran villages, located on the slopes of the Poqueira Gorge in the Sierra Nevadas. This restaurant occupies the top-floor (with lift access for those with mobility issues) of a building centrally located adjacent to the main square and comprises a interior "comedor" and a roof terrace with stunning views over the village towards the surrounding mountains.
The food is Spanish, with strong Alpujarran influences, albeit a little more creative and ambitious that many restaurants in the area. For example, we started with a shared dish of Bacalao (salt cod) in a typically Alpujarran sauce, Sirloin steak with goat's cheese and caramalised peppers and pork loin in mustard sauce. There is a short, but well chosen, selection of Spanish wines, including those from the local DoC Granada region. The "Marques de la Contraviessa" from the nearby Quatro Vientos bodega in Murtas is definitely recommended!
Service is friendly and prompt, although as elsewhere is the region, some knowledge of Spanish is useful. Three courses, with wine, mineral water and coffees cost Euros 75, which we felt provides good value given the quality of the food and wine in a breath taking location.
