I go to Laguna de Apoyo at least once every month because it is my favorite place in Nicaragua. As such, Casa de Las Aves is my favorite place to stay at my favorite place in Nicaragua. I only write reviews when an experience exceeds 5 stars and this is very definitely the case in this instance.
My boyfriend and I stumbled upon Casa de Las Aves by happy accident and as soon as I descended the colorful stairs and was greeted by a smiling dog (Blanca), I knew it was going to be great. I live in Nicaragua and I can guarantee you that there are not a lot of smiling dogs here. As luck would have it, I was correct in my initial assumption and our one night stay extended to an additional night, solely because of the idyllic location, our stunning room, the incredible breakfasts/dinners, and, of course, Kate, the owner. Kate is one of the most beautiful women I have met, inside and out- She has poured, painted, and gardened her heart and soul into Casa de las Aves to make it perfect. Her staff are lovey as well, as they did their best to accommodate my specific needs and/or requests.
Everything is so colorful, comfy, and well designed, with an authentic Nica touch (even the keychains are from Soy Nica). The rooms are beautifully painted and hand-stenciled and furnished with the most comfortable beds and pillows. In the outdoor kitchen, the vegetables are sourced locally and organic. Fun aside, when we were there, there were avocados that are literally the size of your face! Breakfast is included with lodgings and dinner and drinks are available as well. All of our meals were gourmet vegetarian and awesome; I sincerely can not praise it all enough.
There is a complimentary kayak and multiple inner-tubes for guests' additional fun in the lagoon, with the tubes being the best way to enjoy a Toña in my not so inexperienced opinion. In fact, I have been to the Lagoon twice since but only for day trips and I have not enjoyed myself as much and part of this is because I did not have an inner-tube and a Toña.
Thank you for everything, Kate! We will definitely come stay again soon.
