What a terrible experience! For the past few years I have gone to this place with different Russian friends maybe 5 or 6 times. We usually stop on the side of the road to see the memorial where Mandela was arrested, and then we walk across the road to look at the sculpture. Nowhere are there any signs to say you have to pay, or report to some kind of reception.

Last week I went again with Russian friends from Moscow. When we approached the sculpture, some rude, black security guy starts screaming at us and getting totally hysterical and super aggressive. We then understood that we were supposed report to the reception and pay before entering. This was not the case before, as we understood that payment was only necessary if one wanted to visit the museum. The more we tried to explain that we are quite willing to go and pay, the more threatening he became. One would think that in a time when tourists are so scarce, they would welcome us with open arms, but no, he was not at all interested, and even threatened to arrest us!

This place will never see me, or any of my friends again. I will be sure to spread his experience far and wide. I have many followers on my Russian blog about South Africa, and will be sure to let them all know to avoid such a rude and unpleasant place.

A fee of R50 to walk down the path and read laser cut metal signs describing 27 key points of Nelson Mandela’s life to the sculpture feels excessive for a completely outdoors monument. This option is not on the price list and receipts for it are difficulty come by. This fee is an obstacle in accessibility for all South Africans

It is such a special place where people who are South African can realise what Nelson Mandela did for the freedom of people and that all people should be treated with respect and dignity

While in the area we decided to go to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site.
It was such a great experience.

We paid for the adults to enter but the small children could enter for free.

It gave us a whole new understanding on Nelson Mandela.

Really beautifully done and definitely a must when you are in the area.

The capture site has been on my bicket list for years. As a able bodied person it was excellent. It was moving, it was the highlight of my week trip in KZN, but travelling with a disabled person it was pure hell. Nothing was set up for a person in a wheelchair. No adequate parking. (Having to push the wheelchair through mud down a very steep hill) then the paved walkway that is not done according to standards. The walkway down to the actual monument is also so bad that there is no stop steps to help regulate the speed of a wheelchair or a seperate ramp area. Then the best of it all was the disbled toilet. Just large enough to fit a wheelchair. No space to move inside. NO LIGHT, NO WATER TO WASH HANDS and BROKEN HANDLE. (Was told it has never been used). But still had to pay full price. The displays are also not readable as when you sit in a chair you cannot read the glass box displays either. If you are blind you cannot read anything and the audio is cut offto listen to what is in the displays due to covid. No Braille either. If you are in a wheelchair - STAY AWAY.
