Good Location and Good Price

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 6 Sept 2019
Our family of 4 stayed in the family room which is enough for 2 beds and 2 tatami with balcony overlooking the Sumida River. The hotel is located within 10 mins walk from Asakusa Metro Station providing good accessibility. A lot of shops and restaurants nearby for you to hang around. A small onsen on the top floor for hotel guests which is a good facility in downtown Tokyo.

The breakfast is a semi-buffet with 2 choices of main dish and a buffet side dish. The late supper (noodle) is complimentary which is famous bonus for all Dormy Inns. It is a good budget hotel in Tokyo.

We loved the Dormy Inn! It was our first experience with this chain.

Admittedly the rooms were a little dingy. But they were clean and for us the other amenities outweighed this aspect.

The location is fantastic. It's on the Sumida-gawa (Sumida river) directly across from Tokyo sky tree and Asahi beer hall. There's a walking path along the river and yakatabune rentals right below the hotel. You're also just blocks away from Senso-ji and Asakusa jinja, some of the most visited sites in Japan; and the kitchen ware streets (Kappabashi-dori). Asakusa is just a great district to wander around.

Get a river view room if you can. The window and door opened on to a small balcony. Our rooms had a mini-fridge; teapot and matcha; yukata & slippers for use in the hotel, and people totally wear these around.
It's best to get more than one room if you have more than two people.

There were so many services in this hotel we appreciated
- nightly free noodles (ramen in shoyu sauce). They were delicious! I gather this is offered at all hotels in the chain.
-onsen. No tattoos allowed but they'll give you patches to cover them. The baths have separate hours for men and women. They're on the top floor of the hotel and there's an indoor hot tub, cold tub, and sauna, plus an outdoor hot tub and benches to sit on and take in the view - watch you don't create your own view in return! ;-)
-foot bath - also on the top floor, this is outdoors and fun to sit and take in the view
-laundry machines available (washer and detergent were complimentary, dryer available for a cost)

Room tip: Get a river view room

This hotel used to be good but it has gone down hill. The Japanese breakfast is extra and used to have fish, but now does not. Very expensive extra for what it is. The rooms are dirty and carpets stained. The rooms are super small and even with the air conditioning on, the air in the rooms is stuffy and smells a bit "off." They are militaristic in the check in and check out times. At exactly 11 am they called me to ask if I was leaving despite knowing I needed to help my elderly father. On that note, he was extremely ill and they charged us ten dollars extra for him to stay in his room for a mere hour extra until we could reschedule his flight home and book another hotel as they were full. They were incredibly rude about it. He is 95 and their attitude was really unsympathetic. I will never stay there again. The Meguro property is better. Oh, and the hot spring bath they advertise is only available to women at the most inconvenient times. Sexist, too. My room rate also did not come with cleaning. Can you imagine charging EXTRA to clean?

Room tip: If you have the river side view you are lucky. If you have the street/train station side you won't get any sleep as it is noisy.

We stayed at the Dormy Inn for 4 nights (24 April - 28 April ) and what a great stay. Fantastic location, accessed directly from Narita and right in the middle of Asakusa. Rooms not huge but reasonable size for Japan and as usual with hotels here, spotlessly clean. Great breakfast and really helpful staff. Would stay here again and would recommend. Free hot foot spa with great views and free onsen, although we did not use this and free washing machines.

Pros - The great thing about this place is the location. Located near the river the view from your room (should you get one facing the river) is top notch. There are multiple transit lines nearby as well. It’s really nice to step out onto your balcony and see the trains zip by and see Tokyo Skytree in the distance. Another great feature are the amenities. At 9:30 p.m. they offer free ramen and they have free baggage check should you arrive early or plan to leave Japan later. They also have an amazing foot bath on the top floor to soak your feet after a very long day of walking and there is a great view of Tokyo Skytree from that area. There is also an onsen for men and women on the top floor. Check the schedule to verify which times are available for men and women. Finally there is a laundry on the top floor that offers free detergent for your clothes. Just need to put money in the dryer to dry them.

Cons - Despite all the efforts the hotel makes to make your stay a pleasant one, it is still very hard to hide all the wear and tear over the years. The hotel is in need of a facelift. The bathrooms themselves are in serious need of upgrades. The furniture in the room also needs some upgrading as well. They still use a very old key system unlike today’s modern keycard system and you need to drop your key off at reception every time you leave the hotel.

Summary - Despite the age of the hotel it was still a very pleasant stay. Dormy puts in effort to make their guests feel very welcome and at home. I would stay here again if the hotel does some renovations otherwise I might try some place else if I’m ever in Asakusa again.

Room tip: Choose a room facing the river

We have stayed here before and enjoyed ourselves. We like the sense of authenticity and the friendly team. They were always ready to go the extra step for us.

We had a nice room with a view over the river. This was great to pop out at different times to see the sunset particularly.

I really like going up at night to the Onsen and having a good soak. This is a definite bonus.

We thought overall the Dormy was great value. We loved the breakfast too…. YMMV
