Nérac is- fortunately - still one of the few not a well-known villages which are not yet invaded by tourists, so that individual travelers can savour 'genuine' French atmosphere. In Nérac everything turns around Henri IV, who reigned France from 1589 to 1610, and you can feel his 'royal influence' by admiring the mediaeval 'skyline' of this village when sitting in one of the two restaurants at the banks of the river Baiisse which is an Eldorado for house-boat people enjoying what could be called 'the Amazonas' of the Lot-et-Garonne. The hôtel Henri IV*** is alledgedly 'first choice', located in a square with a public parking place which the hotel receptionist told is 'free' even though the signs posted around it require users to observe a 15 minute deadline. We parked our car the whole night without any charges. The hotel itself is fully renovated, does not dispose of a lift, but offers all amenities of a 3-star hotel, even though the room we had ('Standard' selection at 78 € a night for 2 persons was good value for the money). The shower cabinet was okay as far as 'elbow-room' is concerned, but to narrow to avoid incidental contact with the shower faucet. The hotel boasts of a nice terrace with a small swimming pool. As we were invited by friends for dinner, we did not verify the quality of the restaurant. However, the breakfast buffet offered quite a nice selection (even pancakes with maple syrup) and what I can consider 'home-made' jam. Quintessence: an agreeable stay in an absolutely clean room of a hotel in a village that is well worth a visit.
