We arrived without a booking and there were plenty of free tables .Gorgeous sunset and the restaurant is in a lovely setting. Well set tables with good linen.
The food was excellent .Very good shellfish and an excellent choice of wines .
The young waitress was friendly and welcomed us warmly.
I was surprised though that we had to ask to taste the wine and the more mature lady was haughty from the start.
Perhaps it was our nationality but she was very snooty about the food . Supercilious when I asked for accompaniments with the oysters .It has never been a problem elsewhere in France .We probably will not return as a result of her manner .

Great evening at this restaurant food being first class and service impeccable. The wine was good but a little expensive but made up for by the atmosphere of the restaurant.

Passing on a cycle camping tour. Passed all the very average beach-side restaurants in Royan but this looked interesting. It had lots of expensive cars parked outside, and white tablecloths inside. We were in cycling shorts and t- shirts and the staff did very slightly raise an eyebrow at our appearance, but we got excellent service. Fantastic views of the bay. We had the 18 Euro lunch menu which was far better than anything we would have got in the beach for the same price. And the food pornography of watching what some of the other dinners eat was worth the visit alone.

Thoroughly recommended.

After 10 years we revisited Le Cardinal des Mers for lunch on two successive Sundays whilst staying in Deux Sevres. The food was as good as ever. Excellent seafood and very good steaks cooked over a wood fire. Although the restaurant was busy service was very good and space was found for our small dog without any question. I hope it won't be 10 years before we go there again !

We weren't sure what to expect here.

The prices were quite a bit more than we would want to spend on a midweek meal but there are two or three set meals.

I had lamb cooked on a wood burning grill and my wife fish plus starters and pudding.

The food was excellent and considering the surroundings and a fantastic view out to see very good value for money.

I wasn't sure of the staff to start with but soon warmed to them as we both tried to understand each other!

Another one we would go back to
