I absolutely loved this place,

Lovely owners, will help you organise any day trips, onward travel and money exchanges.

Great food (i think probably the best food on the island?). Simple but everything you need in the rooms - very comfy mattress.

Bit of a walk from the main area (in my mind this is a good thing as its way more chilled with better views).

May be worth trying to book in advance if you can, i got a hut on the day i arrived, but when trying to extend my stay it was fully booked.

Stay here.

This is a really exceptional place, run by a wonderful and welcoming family. The bungalows are basic (no AC or hot water, you have to flush the toilet with a bucket) but very clean and comfortable. The bed has a great mosquito net, though the mossies actually weren't too bad despite our proximity to the river. The bungalows have balconies with hammocks that are right on the riverfront. The water buffalo and chickens and ducks wander around the bungalows all day long. So beautiful! Lutz is very knowledgable about the area and about Laos in general, and can help arrange travel as well as activities on the island (for example, we rented bikes one day and biked around Don Khone as well as Don Det). The restaurant has fabulous food and the space is very comfortable and welcoming and relaxing. The German and Lao dishes are all fantastic, as are the juices and shakes. We kept thinking, TODAY is the day we try a different restaurant for dinner... but we never did because it was so tasty and such a welcoming, comfy space. Also, the kitchen is clearly very hygienic, because we arrived in Don Det with a bit of a tummy bug that we'd picked up in Vientiane... and it went away completely while staying at Mama Leuah. We were so sad to leave! We hope to come back someday!

Room Tip: we recommend bringing ear plugs to help ease the noise of the roosters and boats in the morning :)

We travelled around south east Asia and without doubt Mama leuahs was one of the main highlights of the trip. Lutz and the whole family were very welcoming from the minute we arrived. The food is fantastic, some of the best in all of Asia, we were constantly full... Also they do a mean Tom Collins! The restaurant has a relaxed feel and you never feel rushed. The riverside wooden bungalows look out onto the Mekong... an incredible sight to wake up to. We spent many an hour relaxing in the hammocks! Also Lutz arranged bikes, gave us some great advice for the island and also arranged a wonderful boat trip to watch the sunset... something we'll remember forever. There were other things that he sorted out too! We originally planned to stay for two days but ended up staying 5 nights. Overall a wonderful experience... Thanks to Lutz and family!

We arrived on the first day it reopened after the season break and we were very happy to get a bungalow - we had a wonderful stay here! Lutz was a perfect host and gave us valuable information and tips for Don Det and our next few stops in Laos. Everything was very well maintained, very comfortable, clean and food was good. Upon departure, Lutz can organize a direct boat back to the mainland since it is a bit further down the island.
Only the many roosters around the place regularly woke us up early morning - but it was good for us late risers to get out of bed a bit earlier for once ;)

This is a top notch bungalow in Don Det! We originally reserved a 2 night stay and ended up staying for 5 because we absolutely loved this place. It is managed by a German man and his wife who is from Laos - along with their adorable child. They also have a restaurant onsite which is AMAZING (if you don't stay here you have you at least eat here!). The bungalows are spaced out so you don't hear those around you, and you can wake up and watch the sunrise. Each bungalow has 2 hammocks out front which are great for relaxing and also have bike's available for rent. We went all over the island and saw other bungalows and these are definitely the best. I HIGHLY recommend I wish I could give more than 5 stars!! You will love it :)
