Because we were a party of five, our options were quite limited in looking for something reasonably priced with good quality. Many accommodations only take up to 4 people per room. 湯元 ホロホロ山荘 has good sized Japanese rooms to take all five of us.

I started to check for place right next to the lake, but better ones are very expensive and often, their meals aren't as well rated. 湯元 ホロホロ山荘 achieves a good balance.

Rooms are spacious and clean. Meals are buffet style, with a help-yourself-barbecue. Varieties not amazing, but food quality and freshness commendable. The onsen is quite big for a mid-sized hotel. It has the usual sauna, outdoor onsen and indoor variations.

The hotel has a free shuttle to another onsen, but we didn't go. Although it's not next to the lake, it's just a short drive away.

It's not a place to wow a guest, but I would recommend staying here if you don't want to pay too much for a lakeside accommodation.More
