We stayed here for one night with the intention of visiting the industrial museum at Fray Bentos, which is about a 30 minute drive away. Mercedes looked like a much nicer place to stay then Fray Bentos.

The hotel is a fairly uninteresting modern concrete building right in the centre of Mercedes on a corner of a nice plaza. It’s a short walk to the river and there are plenty of drinking and eating options around it. It also has a pool, but we didn’t use it.

The room was ok, clean and reasonably modern, but very bland. Just somewhere to sleep.

We briefly had breakfast before leaving, it was very poor as others have commented, so didn't have much. The restaurant is really dim with very little natural daylight. Luke warm coffee is available as well as some fruit and breads. I suggest skipping it and grabbing something in a cafe over the road.

The big surprise for us was Mercedes itself, it was a much nicer place than we expected with a busy river front and lots of people around and a nice atmosphere - it was a Saturday night, which I’m sure helped. As is typical in Uruguay, it doesn't really start until well after 9pm.

In summary, nothing remarkable, but ok for a night.

The hotel lacks any charm...it ranks more as a business hotel. There is a Don Peperone attached which served breakfast...as others have commented, it was probably the worst breakfast on our trip. The staff could care less, and there is zero atmosphere. The hotel is ok...the room was clean but on the small side. The pool was green,,,not sure if it was painted that colour or full of algae, just not very inviting. We were in town on a Monday, and most restaurants were closed, so we had to make do with 3 meals at Don Peperone's...very unpleasant memory. The lakefront is lovely, and there are some places to eat there...but not on Mondays.

Mercedes is not necessarily a tourist town, but we liked the atmosphere of the town and the river front and actually enjoyed our stay there. We stayed for two nights during the “Jazz a la Calle” festival in January, which made Mercedes probably livelier than normal. The choice regarding the Brisas del Hum, was pretty easy. It has a perfect central location right on the main square and just a few blocks from the river front. Everything is walkable and seemed safe. But, more importantly it is pretty much the only option available in Mercedes. Rates were high, but this was not really unexpected, as we stayed during the city’s main international event.

Check in was pleasant with no issues and English was spoken. Our room was modern, smallish, but comfortable and "hotel clean" with a/c and a fridge. The bathroom was clean and well equipped, but was showing some wear and tear. The shower was just ok, as the shower has had also seen better times. WIFI was free and realiable.

The hotel also has a small pool and a parking area, which was however full when we arrived. But this was not really an issue as street parking in front the hotel is not a problem.

Nothing to complain regarding the hotel as such or the room. Nothing really exceptional, but all fine.

What brings this hotel down is the breakfast, which is included in the room rate. Breakfast is served in Don Peperone (in the hotel) and is an absolute disgrace. It’s a truly chaotic affair. Tables are not cleared. If you find a clear table, you go hunting for coffee cups, plates and cutlery. Food items are just replenished sporadically and partly. In our case, we first looked for an available table, which was not easy. Then we wanted to grab some coffee. Good luck, coffee was available, but bad luck, no cups anywhere. As plates were available we grabbed some food, but then again no cutlery. I was later lucky to get a fork, but as for knives no such luck. After starting to eat, it emerged that one employee was washing coffee cups by hand and was handing out coffee cups at the bar. So we went to bar and got us two. Not worth the effort, as the coffee was terrible. Also, the fruit juices offered were of the watery and sugary type and just rubbish. The food we tried was subpar with the exception of some of the cakes. Also, after the hand washed coffee cups were handed out the employee disappeared again. Only, one waitress remained, but she did not seem to be interested to be involved in the breakfast affair at all. She spent her time polishing steak/pizza knives for lunch and couldn´t be bothered to deal with the breakfast buffet or clear tables. One woman asked for an item of the buffet, that has not been replenished for a quite a while. All she got was a “No”. The next morning, we didn’t even to bother with breakfast, although it was paid for in the room rate. By far the worst breakfast experience for a very, very long time (and this is a 4* classified hotel and priced accordingly).

Based on previous comments on TA, management seems to be aware of the problem, but maintains that Don Peperone is an independent operation. Well, sorry, but this is not good enough, especially if one has to pay for breakfast with the room rate, anyway.

To sum it up, we enjoyed our stay in Mercedes, the hotel is decent, the rooms are fine, front desk staff was pleasant, but breakfast is terrible beyond description.

We stayed here one night on our return from Punta del Este. The hotel is nice and the hotel staff are lovely however the restaurant beside is a disgrace. We found out after that it's franchised out and there have been many problems due to this. We experienced first hand as the staff in the restaurant were rude and really didn't want to be there. We experienced this our first night when we ate some pizza. The real piece de resistance was the next morning and breakfast. I arrived for breakfast with my wife to join my friends for breakfast at 9.45. When I arrived there was only coffee left. Breakfast is advertised until 10. I mentioned this to the servers and they told me breakfast finishes at 10am, when I looked at my watch it said 9.50am. I explained that in my experience travelling that I had never seen anyone remove the food before time. My friend had arrived at 9.40am and she said that at this point they had began to remove the food. It was very unprofessional. When we mentioned it to the hotel staff they did their best to rectify the situation. My advice if you do stay get up early for breakfast and eat dinner/lunch somewhere else. We did get a discount after complaining so hats off to the hotel staff but unfortunately the franchaise restaurant Don Pepperone is effecting this review due to its unprofessionalism and horrible staff.

Mercedes is very short on hotel rooms and moreso restaurant tables. This hotel is in the city square and was re - done with a lick of paint only too many years ago. It is not a holiday place, despite an outside pool by the car park, and the room are small 70s or 80s style; shower curtains; mould around the windows. It works because there is nowhere else and it is not expensive and it is in the middle. Breakfast and any catering is in the co-located pizza place.
Keep driving.........

Room Tip: they are all the same shape size design etc
