If you have to stay here, definitely make sure you get to stay at the new wing. The old wing reeks of cigarette smell. The food is mediocre and the onsen is lousy. If you must stay one night and more to Kogen Spa for the same price and Kogen comes with breakfast and dinner thrown in.

Room tip: stay only in the new wing

The main building has seen its better days but the new wing where we stayed was great. Parking was just beside the lobby.

It came with everything we had expected...a rather new and cosy Japanese style room with a nice view of nature, great onsen (both indoor and out), friendly staff, proximity to everything Sounkyo had to offer and pleasant meals (breakfast and dinner). Wifi in the lobby only though.

Best of all, it came at a fraction of the cost to what the other lodgings in the vicinity charge. What a deal.

Room tip: Ask for rooms in the newer wing.

The hotel is situated on it's own slip road at the main junction into the town. I was put off by the silly prices of the other hotels in Sounkyo-onsen so opted for the Mount View after a certain amount of searching. The price we obtained was all inclusive of breakfast and dinner. The latter was Japanese. This is the point on the Japanese trips that one immerses into the cuisine. The breakfast was good, lacking on American pancakes, but enough western so as to avoid the shock of raw fish for breakfast. Dinner was something different. Each night we had the cooked at your table covered meal which was lit up as you sat at the table, never knowing what it was until it was cooked and revealed, but still after that not knowing exactly what it was :). There was nothing too problematic after being a graduate of raw sea urchins and deer on other trips, nothing too problematic. So the food was all rather good.

Broadband and internet not had not arrived at this hotel. The guy on the front desk said no internet but gave me a big smile so I was not too upset. This was the first hotel and only hotel on the trip barren of internet.

It was not a total disaster since one did spot a cafe at the top end of the town opposite the rope way [100 metres down] which offered free wifi. So we visited each day for our caffeine and internet fix. It is a very friendly place. One did spy out other guests who were doing the same.

Also the town appears to have a wide choice of eateries so even if you did not eat in there would have been options.

Back to the hotel, it would be true to say it was a little run down and beaten, but then the staff were very friendly and so too the guests, meals all inclusive which were good and prices reasonable. The canyon is a bit of a let down due to most the walk now closed for good so it seems related I suspect to the new road development. You can get around the canyon sites in next to know time. You have the park on the door step with some serious hikes but here it's worth noting to print out all of the English details before hand since nobody in the park office speaks English. The office is close to the rope way.

Kogen Onsen can be visited from Sounkyo-onsen with one of two hikes. There is the small secret of the lake side parking, the bus up and lack of English sign-age on the road telling you where the lake side parking is given that it's hidden under the trees away from the road down a dirt track. We didn't exhaust all of the days out we could have done from Sounkyo-onsen.
