Hakuba Yamano Hotel
Ranked #22 of 102 Hotels / Ryokan in Hakuba-mura
Reviewed 13 February 2016

We arrived after midnight, tired and grumpy... Not sure they knew what hit them, there were 7 of us and no one could decide on what room they wanted. The owner patiently stood and waited until we eventually agreed. The hotel itself is very clean, everything functions but isn't fancy, so be aware of that, we had a twin room that was quite cozy which made it tricky with ski gear.. So at this point my review probably doesn't look like an 'excellent' but it is - the owners are fabulous, very focused on making your stay the best. Nothing was too much trouble, the breakfast is great, in a lovely room with views of the mountain. It was always a pleasure to come home to after a long day of skiing. The onsen helped with aches and pains.

Room Tip: We had two rooms on the 3rd floor and two on the 1st, the 3rd floor was definitely better

We recently stayed at the Yamano hotel for a 6 day skiing/snowboarding holiday. The hosts Keita and Monica welcomed us and immediately organised our ski hire and passes for the next day. Due to limited snow at Happo one Keita was very helpful in advising other slopes to try for less experienced skiers. Having an Onsen on site was great at the end of a day on the slopes. Keita was always available for drop off into town for dinner, to the slopes and the bus station. Rooms were very clean and comfortable with good storeage as you enter the room. Overall a great place to stay.

My sister and I are beginner skiers, and we absolutely couldn't fault this wonderful Hotel in Hakuba! The staff were SO knowledgeable, and completely organised our stay for us, recommending reliable & affordable ski hire, best skiing areas, calling free shuttles to transport us to and from the slopes, as well as pointing us in the direction of the best food in the area! Our stay in Hakuba was made 100% better because of Monica & Keita's wonderful service & advice.

The hotel is located a pleasant 10 min walk to restaurants and shops, directly across from the 1998 olympic ski jump. Rooms were comfortable and warm, and the breakfast very tasty!

When we return to Japan in future, we will definitely be staying here!
Thank you to all the wonderful staff at Yamano Hotel!

Situated opposite the 1998 Olympic ski jump, Yamano is certainly in a beautiful and quiet location. Both Keita and Monica are very kind and generous people and welcomed our family with warmth, as if to their own home. Their staff are very friendly, efficient, and attentive.

The hotel itself is dated in style and its age shows across all aspects. It is basic, but functional, and has free wifi. The relaxed atmosphere in the hotel is very pleasant and you will feel as if part of a big family. The rooms are very spacious for Asian standards, and the western beds are very comfortable. Bathrooms are small, but again functional, and the water pressure and hot water is great. Shampoo and body wash are provided, as well as a hair dryer, toothbrush and an onsen towel. The rooms are also warm and have sufficient storage for clothes and other items, as well as a gown, overcoat, and slippers to wear to the onsen (or even to breakfast). The onsen (hot spring bath) is separated into women’s and men’s sections, and despite the initial shock of nudity for some, is very much recommended. It is a great way to relax and soothe aching muscles after skiing! It is very clean and soaps and hair dryer are provided. The ski room is crowded in the mornings, but warm and keeps your ski gear dry and safe.

Happo One town is about a 15 minutes walk, but on a slippery snowy road, may take much longer. The hotel does provide drop offs, which is very useful when you want to go out for some dinner. Dinner at the hotel is also exceptional and fresh, so this is also recommended. The hot pot and BBQ options are delicious. Just ask any of the staff to advise you on some food options and they will gladly book it for you.

The main let downs of the hotel are its location and breakfast option variability. Despite being in a beautiful place, it is very inconvenient to get to the lifts with young children. Adults may ski down or walk to the nearest lift, Nakiyama (500 meters), but the gondola there does not have easy greens to go down to other parts of the resort, and this is problematic for starting skiers and young children. The Evergreen school does pick up the children straight from the hotel, which is useful, but to return to the hotel, the children must first be picked up by the free shuttle bus (Numbers 1 or 2) and then walk up to the hotel with their skis. In fairness to the hotel, the actual resort infrastructure is quite poor and resort section connections are far from simple, which contributes to the issue. If you wish to go to other resorts, there is a shuttle that goes to Hakuba 47 and Goryu outside the hotel every morning. The breakfast is sadly very repetitive and quite limited, but tasty. Usually, there is an option of cereals and breads, eggs, sausages/chicken nuggets, fruit and rice.

With regards to one of the schools, Evergreen. Please keep in mind that young children in the beginning stages skiing WILL NOT get more than 45 minutes skiing in the half-day. The school is very poorly situated (mid-way up Kokusai) - upon arrival, the children will faff around for over an hour, and only then be taken by bus 5 minutes down the road to Sakka (which takes another hour because of the time it takes to bring all the children down the hill to the bus stop, sit them on the bus, and out again on the other side), where they have their lessons. You CANNOT bring your children straight to Sakka and sign them in - this is not permitted by the school. We have spoken to management and advised this is done, as it is an absolute nightmare to bring them there and pick them up from that location, and a waste of money and valuable skiing time. For older children who are experienced skiers, it is much easier, but still not ideal. Despite the logistical issues, the teachers at the school are fantastic and very good at their job. If you do not mind that your child only skis 45 minutes in half a day, then by all means go for it, but please consider this in your decision.

In conclusion, the hotel is not in the best location, but if you do not mind walking to the bus every morning in your ski gear, it is very functional, cosy, and the staff are wonderful. Personally, I would recommend staying somewhere closer to the town and the ski lifts. If you need to get the kids to and from Evergreen ski school in the morning - stay close to Kokusai, and this will make your life much easier.
