Urabandai Lake Resort Nekoma Rikyu

The hotel is a typical large Japanese resort hotel, ideal for the Goshikinuma walk (the hotel is over the road from the walk's Visitor Centre). We did the walk one way and caught a bus back to the Visitor Centre (buses are not very frequent, only very hour or so). The rooms were relatively large but dated and in need of a makeover. The onsen was pleasant. Staff were efficient. The dinner buffet was good, there was plenty of choice, but it was very busy (the hotel had coach parties visiting). The hotel was good value overall.

We were a group of 10 that included 2 children. The hotel was very nice. We especially enjoyed the outside Onsen. We had a buffet dinner which was quite good. A lot of selection. We took a walk to the lake close by. It was very cold at the time and still partially frozen but very beautiful. Rooms were clean and very nice.

We were so excited to stay this hotel since the pictures on the website of this hotel looked pretty good. The reservation service was helpful. The receptionist was very friendly as well. Unfortunately, we encountered a very bad situation since the train was stopped due to the strong wind. This did not disturb our trip. Nevertheless, the service of shuttle bus did!

We tried to phone them for waiting for us before arriving the station. There was a female receptionist said she did not speak English and then just left the phone with no answering. The other foreigner receptionist was very helpful. However, when we arrived at station, we did not see the bus. After phoning them, the receptionist told us they send us another shuttle bus on 15:00. And actually, the bus arrived there at about 15:18. After getting on the bus, the driver told us to wait until next train arrived. When checking in, the receptionist told us that the original driver said that he could not wait for us since there were other passengers. Nonetheless, we arrived at about 14:50 and the original shuttle bus schedule was 14:45. Incredible and unfriendly service! The original shuttle bus did not want to wait us for just 5 minutes but the other shuttle bus driver told us to wait about more than 20 minutes.

Moreover, after checking in, we did not complain at all. We were so tired due to the long travel (and of course, the receptionist was very friendly). They up-graded us to a suit that we actually might not want due to the reason of inconvenience. It was a surprise. However, another terrible nightmare happened. When we went to bed, one of the room was so noisy due to some unknown reasons (might be the pipe line, etc). My mother was sleeping tightly. I did not want to wake her up so I did not sleep all the night and got up very early for next journey.

Well, it was a terrible experience for us and it was the worst hotel experience for us in Japan. We did expect a nice stay there. What’s a pity!

Room Tip: Beautiful view but the rest need to be managed

Thank you for staying with us.
We are so sorry about unhelpful bus service and noise.
We do not completely judge by selfish.
Also we reconsider between arrival time and pickup time.

We will make efforts to prevent a recurrence of problems.
Thank you for letting us know about this.

After a half-day skiing at Nekoma ski resort, my family got on a free shuttle ride headed to the hotel. The hotel is only 15 min. away from the ski resort, providing easy access and the shuttle bus runs several times during the day, so no inconvenience in transportation.

We arrived at the hotel and decided to on the left side of the hotel, only to realize it was an upper class hotel facility and the front desk was also different. It would have been better if a hotel staff was available at the bus drop-off area helping people check in and advise which side of the hotel to go.

Check-in process was fairly smooth and we received two large keys upon check-in. Given the huge size and space of the hotel, the hotel staff don't provide escort server to the room, which is perfectly fine with my family.

Our room had 3 beds (already prepared for 3 people) and the space was nicely designed with some private area between the corner bedroom and the main bedroom. The toilet and powder room is separate. It seemed to have been well thought out.

The hotel's hot springs area is huge! Only disappointment was the towels. You would have to bring your own towels to the hot springs... most of the hotels/ryokans in Japan similar to the class would have towels prepared at the hot springs area. So we brought our body and face towels. Luckily carrying case was available at the room, so it wasn't too bad.

Dinner time! As we were super hungry, we were happy to know that the dinner was buffet style. We came to know the fact that the restaurant is managed by a former Prince hotel chef, famous for buffet style restaurants in Tokyo area. There were lots of food choices to choose from, starting from local dishes to Japanese and to Chinese. All of the food was quite tasty! We ordered a bottle of sake to accompany the food.

Again to hot springs. Compared to the size of the hotel and with some 300 rooms, the hot springs area was not as crowded as we expected, which was a good thing.
After dinner, we decided to try out the Karaoke place for 3500 yen for 1 hour. A little expensive, but what the heck. We're there for some fun after all.

After a short 1 hour Karaoke stress relieving session, we returned to our room for a good night sleep. The bed was not as comfy, the mattress is on the hard side, quite typical for Japanese hotels, so no complaints there.

The room was dry so we asked for a humidifier. Less than 5 minutes, a hotel staff arrived at the door. What an express service!

Morning breakfast was again buffet style with lots of choices. Having our belly fully stuffed with lots of interesting local dishes, we decided to take a short walk to the lake. The lake seems to be famous for winter fishing in the middle of the lake with a hole dug out on the surface for catching fish. Gold House Meguro is the place that manages a tour and charges people 4500 JPY per head. For 3 hour trip with risk of not catching the fish but served with fish tempura... we couldn't stop thinking what a rip off the tour is... They need to reconsider their price and do better marketing for sure.

Luckily hotel provides shuttle bus to a nearby JR station Inawashiro for free. We took a 10:25 bus to the station heading to Aizu-Wakamatsu for some sake and village tour.

Overall, it was a pleasant stay. However, the hotel needs to figure out a way to better utilize so much empty spaces and occupancy.
