Oyado Zuigetsu is the most relaxing, healing and decadently delicious onsen my husband and I have ever visited. Tomo, her husband and two children are kind, generous and loving people. The baths are crystal clean, natural, and soothing, the rooms are zen, thoughtfully designed and comfortable, and the food blew our minds. Twelve exquisitely prepared courses prepared by 75 year old master who hand prepares some dishes months in advance so the flavours have time to mature and come alive - decadent. We had the most magical and romantic time, we left rejuvenated, cleansed and feeling peace. If you can go please do it will live in your heart forever.

My trips to Japan have mostly been to just Tokyo and Kyoto, so it was a nice change of pace to visit a beautiful little town like Yugawara. I unfortunately only stayed one night, so I didn't have time to explore much, but there are old shrines, a few public hot springs where you're just supposed to bathe your feet, and waterfalls.

Zuigetsu itself is lovely and immaculately kept. It's up on a hillside, so take a taxi from the train station if you have luggage! The ryokan has just 5 rooms, so it's very quiet, and my room at least had a great view. It has separate sex baths, both with one inside bath and one outside bath. Note that the rooms have a vanity and toilet room, but there is no shower or bath attached to the room, so you must go to to the shared baths. The outside bath was amazing - I went late enough in the fall that the outside air was pretty chilly, so plunging into a hot pool and gazing at the stars felt wonderful. Since there are so few rooms, I actually had all the baths to myself when I went.

I think you have the option of reserving just the room and not meals, but I opted for the dinner and breakfast and it was definitely worth it. The dinner was multiple courses, and mostly traditional Japanese but with some twists, and breakfast was a full Japanese spread. There was even homemade yogurt!

I must note that I speak very little Japanese, but the proprietress spoke enough English that it wasn't much of a problem and she really went out of her way to make sure I knew where everything was and what the dishes were in the meals. When I asked about sake pairings, she was kind enough to let me taste some.

Overall, I highly recommend the experience and would definitely come back, but maybe for two nights so I have more time to explore!
