A famous historic tomb situated in a nice park with interesting trails and clean restrooms. There are 2 museums here as well as the Nakaoyama tumulus. A volunteer said he spoke no English but kinda indicated they've dug up the stones and removed things to museum(s).

Kitora experience is free & much more informative. So skip this unless you are really into tumuli. The paintings are beautiful but there is only a small pamphlet in English

Takamatsuzuka Tomb is famous for its mural paintings. But unfortunately, we cannot visit inside. So, what we can see at this site is just a small hill in a park. However it incites us to imagine about the life in the ancient time.

The burial mound rose up right above us from where we parked our bicycles.

We were disappointed to see that is really a very tiny thing. We had expected something larger, at least the size of the keyhole tombs we had seen on other bicycling adventures in Japan. This is a modest kofun. We climbed up to the top of it on the path and walked around, photographing it. From the top there is a pleasant view to the valley below.

We began to realize that chasing sites here was going to be another exercise in pursuing the small and precious and perhaps not so very important things in and of themselves - though certainly historically the totally of the place is very important.

For us, it became the search experience and the bicycling that counted most.
