Mountain Getaway

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Jan 2019
I came here in December with my family. They turned a suite into a family room with 4 beds. 2 beds in a room and 2 beds in the hall but still managed to have a couch at tv area. Very spacious. We loved the onsen. Big place with indoor and outdoor onsen. There was even a kid's onsen so little ones can join. The buffets for dinner and breakfast were excellent with good spread. There was Christmas performance at restaurant when we were there.

I booked this trip for my partner's birthday, the idea was to be in the mountains and relaxed. Couldn't have been further from. It was a large hotel, incredibly confusing layout with absolutely no soul. Only single beds, no double or queen. It was a long way from town, with multiple tolls to get into town. Breakfast was horrible, the fruit laid out on platters was frozen in parts, melted in others, eggs were inedible. It is nothing like it is represented on the website. It is so overpriced for what it is.

The hotel staff were nice and friendly. The breakfast they offered on the 2nd floor was nice. Handmade rice ball was delicious. It was a enjoyment to take a walk near the hotel. View was good and air was fresh.

The room was way to big for 1-2 people to stay. It would be better if they could have some remodel for hotel rooms.

My friend told me about this place & booked it for me.

Just a note at the beginning. Check there website. They have shuttle buses to take you from Karuizawa Station to the resort and back. But they have a schedule. So check for the bus times. And they leave right on time. So don't be late. Or it'll be a costly taxi ride up.

You'll be looking at a 30 - 40 min. bus ride up, from Karuizawa Station. Yes up. You're pretty much going up a small mountain.
Check in was straight forward & they do have someone at reception that understands & speaks English.

I payed for the upgraded room. Yes, I had to pay more but for me (personally), it was worth every penny. My room also included a breakfast & dinner buffet. Which you'll have to give them a time slot, for when you're going to be arriving, and your slip for the buffet.

The room was a great size, water & beer in the fridge (no charge) every day.
The bathroom a decent to normal size with all the amenities you need. Soaps, shampoo, conditioner, razor, tooth brush/ paste, and even q-tips.
This room came with it's own little patio & hot spring bath tub. This was awesome!

The buffet had enough food to keep you filled. They had western & Japanese cuisine.
The scrambled eggs might be considered to be runny, compared to North American standards, but honestly it tasted very good and a no biggy for me. The dinner buffet was the same, and a good variety as well.

The resort has it's own onsen as well to enjoy. They have a smoking room, that is close to there, for any smokers that want to stay here. They have some Ping-pong tables and other things to do. This is a nice place to just get away from the city and just relax.

The staff here are very accommodating & helpful. They even stand outside, to see you off, as you leave. Not just one person either. Amazing!

This place seems like it's in the middle of no where and the facility is quite large.
But if you just want to get away from it all and come to relax. Then maybe look into this place.
For me. It was worth every penny & I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We've stayed here 3 out of the past 4 Christmases.

Only around 20mins drive from down town Karuizawa and well worth it for the experience of staying the snowy mountains . The Japanese/Western Suite rooms are great value and the best size and layout I've found for a family of four in Japan. Two beds in one bedroom, a Japanese tatami bedroom and a massive living area.

They also have free onsen, a heated indoor pool (costs), and karaoke rooms etc. The staff are friendly and helpful for a great overall experience.

My only complaint would be the breakfast is overpriced and pretty low quality. But there are a couple of couple of convenient stores 1km down the road so we just grab something there.

Indeed, the room is wide and the hot spring quality is good. However, They were all.

Though there were 3 pair of slipper in the room,
bath towel, towel, toothbrush, glass, tea cup , mug cup ,tea set are all for two persons. I called to bring them but the staff could not succeed in the first try. In other country,it happened that so so. But in Japan, this is the first time that it is not equipped and the staff failed.

We had to eat dinner in a hall, not in a restaurant. During our dinner, there were large groups, at least 3. It was very noisy and they are rude. But the staff didn't cautioned them and didn't rebuke them.

Meal was disastrous. There were number of dishes but were bad. It was bad rather than not delicious. Worst of all, nigiri zushi and ramen. That was not a nigiri-zushi. That was not a ramen. Do they not ashamed to provide them?

During the dinner time, the light was dark and staff turn on the music. A stuffed animal character, I guess it was a dog, come out and visit the tables. But the dog flatters large groups only.

The staff should separate the individual customer and large groups. They crashed into me and never get in that lines and break ranks. It is dangerous.

There was a large communal bath. The spring quality is splendid. But! A floor was too slimy to walk, and we slipped and nearly fell down. And there were few handrails. It is dangerous.

In the next morning, we were able to choose the breakfast venue from two places. We chose the restaurant without hesitation. We were able to eat the breakfast peacefully. But there's a poor choice of menu. We all were disappointed. About the taste, better than dinner.

We will never come again and never recommend.
