Reviewed 8 August 2008

Stayed at the Strandebarm Fjord Hotel for three nights in July 2008. Went there really as seems to be the only hotel for about 100Km on this part of Hardanger Fjord, but turned out to be an excellent choice.

Booked by phoning hotel and sending email plus fax to make sure as we found that smaller hotels in Norway did not seem to be too "Internet aware". In fact fax was not necessary as hotel had efficiently already noted down our requirements.

Hotel on Fjord edge in the village of Strandebarm - which is sandwiched between the Hardanger Fjord and gorgeous hills running up to rocky crags. We visited several locations in our vacation in Norway, all incredibly beautiful, but were blown away by this area and by its incredible almost spiritual tranquillity and the diversity of scenic experience. One minute one was facing an awe inspiring view across grand fjords backed by glaciers, the next an intimate scenes of a track running though woods to a small inlet. This pattern repeated for hours driving and walking round the area.

Hotel is typically Norwegian i.e. not particularly smart but everything works well and very clean. All rooms have Fjord views – some better than others. We had a good sized room with balcony overlooking Fjord. First time in Norway that we had a decent sized bathroom with proper bath tub - with excellent shower. Nice lounge and small garden with tables overlooking Fjord. Wireless Internet in lounge.

Good – but not exceptional breakfasts. Had dinner in hotel each night – as absolutely no where else to eat in area. We don’t eat meat and hotel very accommodating in sorting out something different and nice for us to eat each night.

Staff absolutely charming, friendly and incredibly helpful.
