Located on the south bank of the Indus river at 3,100m, 65km from Leh. There are 3 major shrines: the Dukhang (Assembly hall), the Sumtsek and the Temple of Manjushri, built in 12th and 13th centuries. Translator's temple (Lotsabha Lakhang) and a the Lakhang Soma are also important. The intricate murals are some of the oldest surviving paintings in Ladakh. Huge statues of Buddha, intricate wood carvings and baroque style artwork are worth seeing. To understand the art, it would be useful to read up on it prior to the visit as there are very few signages and the monks do not explain very well. Entry is INR 20 for adults. The monastery is closed between 1pm-2pm. Budget 1 hour to see. Photography is prohibited.

My wife and I along with our nephew and nieces with their children visited this Gompa last year on our way to Leh from Kargil. Very soothing atmosphere.

In quite and quaint location, Alchi monastery is the prfect exhibition of the art and architecture in India 1000s of years back. Kudos to the authorities managing to preserve it. Perhaps one of the top 3/4 places worth genuinely visiting in Leh. Its a bit of a walk but not much steps to climb like in other monasteries in Leh. also one can certainyl enjoy the great food in Zimskhang Restaurant on the way. The place is closed between 1-2 and a nominal charge of Rs 30 per person is there for upkeeping the monastery.
