Review of Dongzhulin Temple

Dongzhulin Temple
Reviewed 11 September 2013

I visited Dongzhulin Monastery three times, Dongzhulin monastery is on the way from Shangri-la to Deqing County and nearby the first bend of Jinshajiang River (upper ranch of Yangtze River). At the beginning or middle of the month, you will see local people coming to preach at the monastery. Comparing to Songzanlin monastery in Shangri-la, Dongzhulin is more interesting and few tourists.

We visited the Dongzhulin Temple one afternoon in April from our boutique lodge outside Benzilan. The temple is spectacularly sited, perched nearly on the edge of a cliff -- like the monastery/ harem in the Powell/ Pressburger movie 'Black Narcissus. You enter through a big, open courtyard, where festivals are celebrated, into the large prayer hall, with its towering red lacquered columns. When we arrived, the monks were seated in the hall chanting and praying and mostly ignoring us -- although there were a few discreet smiles and welcoming hand-waves. We walked around the walls, decorated with beautiful tankas and Buddhist wall paintings and colorful statuary.

We were able to go upstairs to the second and even third stories of the Temple to inspect the various elaborately decorated shrines and traditional Tibetan Buddhist religious art and watch some of the art being restored by a pair of monks. At no point did anyone bother us or prevent us from looking. And best of all, there were no other tourists there.

Note: of course the temple is not handicapped or wheelchair accessible.

All in all a wonderful experience and worth the trip to Benzilan.

Well. I have seen loads of buddhist temples in China, Tibet and Bhutan. This one is more like the Bhutanese ones, like a fortress commanding the hillside. It had the most amazing butter ornaments i've ever seen at the main altar. Unfortunately no photographing inside allowed. The village around it is worth a stroll, and the location up on the rock is a sight in itself.
At certain times the lamas hold spiritual mask dance performances, but we didn't get to see it. There is a display of the dance costumes though.

Perched on the high ridge this temple is simply amazing with views of the canyons below. Where eagles dare comes to mind (as with other reflections!).
