We choose the Eliros Mare at Kavros because of the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor - previous contributors were not wrong ! This hotel is located on the beach side of the E75 National road. My wife and I were the only two off the coach for the Eliros and we were greeted by a young man who took our cases and led us to reception. The reception staff booked us in, fitted us with our 'all inclusive' bands after which the same young man took us to our room (101 - George Orwell eat your heart out - it was not a room of horrors !), a quick change of clothes and we were in the dining room for some much welcomed food.
If we had not been immediately impressed with our reception we were certainty more than impressed with the dining room, large and spacious with the option of alfresco dining. The food and service was excellent as was the attentiveness of the staff. We managed a quick 2 hours by the pool, feet up with a coffee in the lounge, a quick explore and then it was time for a shower and get dressed up for dinner. Understandably as we were on a very early morning flight and awake all night we were tired - but not tired enough to enjoy the delicious food on offer buffet style, lashings of wine or beer available at the table - the deserts you could die for - tremendous variety of Greek pastries and fruit - with all the yoghurt and honey you could wish for. The service at the tables was unbelievably swift, no sooner had you placed your cutlery in the 'finished' position your plates were whisked away. The staff were chatty but not overbearing, and English seemed to be their favourite second language.
The room 'servicing' was also excellent to a fault..... we were there 7 nights and the sheets were replaced three times as were the towels. The bathroom/toilet was kept very clean - the shower worked well and no matter the time of day or night there was constant hot water. The communal toilets by the pool and beach bar were also kept very clean.
We spent some time by the pool, again spotless with comfortable sun beds and large parasols. We did not get to spend any time on the very sandy beach except for a walk on the one day it was cloudy and very windy with quite large waves. The abundant sun beds on the beach looked just as comfortable with a substantial board walk from the hotel grassed area, which incidentally sported the beach bar, entertainments area and toilets. There was also a large children's play park, usually with a animation crew in attendance.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner - coffees and drinks at the bar - nothing was too much trouble for the staff at the Eliros Mare, always a smile and an appropriate greeting - Kalimera or Kalinihta. We cannot comment on the evening entertainment as we did not partake...... however the Sunday night BBQ and cultural evening is not to be missed. We understand the Eliros has a sister hotel - The Mythos - just up the road - has an equally good reputation. As we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay we would not hesitate to use the Eliros Mare again.

Room Tip: Garden or pool view on upper floors main block.....

This was a bit of a last minute choice due to the cancellation of a previous booking. On arrival we were warmly welcomed by the front of house staff, and shown to our room which was nice and spacious and over looked the pool area. Luggage was brought soon afterwards to the room for us. I required a rental car, so this was arranged through the front desk , usually there is a premium for this but on looking around after, I saw the rates were about the same elsewhere. There is a small charge for the room safe, but the aircon and the WiFi are free and worked nicely. We were half board so had to run up a room tab but this was less than 300€ for a week for two. We did splash out on the Metaxa and some very good local red wines for dinner though.
All meals follow a buffet style, but you can eat as much as you like, however we saw very little food being wasted, which is a change. The choice of dishes for breakfast was very good, all tastes being catered for, with very carefully thought out presentation. We managed to have a five course breakfast most days, the orange and mango smoothies are a little coarse but taste superb. For evening meal the selection changes each day, though there are the staple of pasta etc, and a special area for the kids with modern fast food. Not to mention a specific Cretan food selection. The restaurant staff were very helpful and willing to talk when they had the time, The whole area of the hotel was very clean, the sheets and towels changed every day. All the staff we there to make your stay as enjoyable as it could possibly be. Each day when we left for our car journey around Crete the staff would ask where we were going and advise on additional places to visit or where to be careful when driving, and on our return they asked how the day was.
We had a very enjoyable break at the Eliros Mare Hotel and have already recommended it to friends, it is a gem that us Brits have yet to discover, as most of the clients are currently German, Russian or French.
Lastly I would just like to say a simple thank you to the all the staff for making the holiday so memorable.

We booked the Eliros Mare Hotel nine days prior to flying out on a last minute holiday. On arrival from the airport we were greeted with a lovely fruit punch drink as we went through the checking in process which was a nice touch.

The room was situated at the front of the accommodation overlooking the beach and was perfectly clean and functional. We were offered the chance to upgrade early into the stay but declined due to the fact that we were happy with our surroundings and didn't feel we needed to move.

The hotel looks to have undergone a recent renovation and everything in clean, modern and very welcoming. The "all-inclusive" package is well worth it and the food is generally quite good, although we did find it hard to find my son a full plate of food on 'fish night' not any fault of the hotel, more the picky eating habits of a 5yr old boy.

The all inclusive package does mean that there is something to eat at any time of the day, be it in the main restaurant, lounge, or the beach bar.

There are two main areas where people congregate, the pool or the beach, and both areas have sun loungers provided. We tend to be pool dwellers where we can keep our eyes on our kids, but we did spend a few hours on the beach at different times during our stay. The pool is kept lovely and clean and not generally busy at all, the beach is lovely and sandy ( apart from a small amount of shingle at the tide line ) When the green flag is out, the water is calm, clear and really warm, and there is even a small number of fish swimming around your feet. It was really relaxing. One word of warning is that if the red flag is out, it's no joke, there is a reason. During the afternoon in high winds there seems to be a small rip-tide right in front of where the hotel is situated. We did see the life guards constantly asking people to not go past their waists in the water and on two occasions they has to go in and pull people out after they got stuck. That being said, during our 11 day stay, we only saw the red flag from our room a few times - and if it is too bad in the sea the pool is only 50 meters away ;)

I must also add that the staff throughout the hotel were amazing and very friendly and managed to speak to us in English even though they spoke to the majority of the German guests in German. Nikos deserves a special mention because he was really friendly and when he found time in his busy schedule he stopped for a chat and a joke. My son really liked him.

On writing this review I'm contemplating looking up how much it would be to come back next year as we loved it so much.

Excellent impressions from the first step into the hotel. Unforgettable meeting at the reception. Me and my daughter were surrounded with utmost care and attention - which we never met in other 4 star hotels. All requests were immediately taken care of - so we could just relax and feel at home. Smart and cordial receptionist Elena was very pleasant to talk to and helpful. Brilliant restaurant Boss - Olga! Under her energetic control the restaurant works like a clock! Waiters - polite, smiling, quick - made us feel very comfortable. The design of food pleased eye. The variety and quality of menu - on high level. The design of garden - is just admiration, like Botanic garden, and always clean and fresh. Spacious room with modern design, all good working facilities, fine cleaning. Mosquitoes - yes, had to buy fumigator. Animation team - Olga, Despina, Iris, Natalya, Tilemachos - Bravo! Created brilliant shows, smart and funny, made enjoyable time for kids in mini club, aquagym, beach volley, dances, tennis, laughter yoga for adults. We had great time with them. There was also a very cosy aegeo spa near the beach with very nice administrator and masseur Evi who was always attentive to our needs and tried to do the best for our comfort. I liked that during massage I could listen to sea waves, feel breeze. I took massage from Evi and Agapi, their performance was very relaxing - because of magic hands! I also like their ritual with rose water) And free feet massage on arrival - it's a great idea! Need to add that the hotel is on the beach - with sand. There is enough space to replace your towel and umbrella if u don't want to rent the hotel's, To sum up - there was all for us to have brilliant rest after the hard year.

Room Tip: Rooms with seaview are close to stage- will be noisy till 23pm cause of night shows. Numbers 123, 124 etc had view to mountains
