“Great for the kids”

Affen- und Vogelpark Eckenhagen
Reviewed 17 October 2016

The park is tucked away in the rolling hills of the Bergische Land and the drive there alone is worth it. There is ample parking and, as it was a sunny day, the parking lot was packed. However, the park is so vast that it didn't feel over crowded once we were in.

Getting in was tricky as they only accept cash. We had scrape every cent together as we usually don't carry 40 EURs plus in cash. You should as well bring plenty of 50 cent coins to use the rides inside the park.

The park is well kept, the animals look well looked after. The free-flight-enclosures are very nice and the kids loved discovering the various birds. Try spotting the well camouflaged owls in the Owl Castle.

There is large playground and some really rather quaint rides such as a merry go around on water and a wild water slide. Do not expect amusement park level roller coasters, as I said they are quaint and cost 50ct a shot and that makes the park even more charming to me.

After 4 hours we finished the walk through the park although I am sure you can spend a lot more time there.

All in all it was great, only the Cash Only at the entrance is a bit of a downside especially if through this you loose all the 50ct coins you may have on you.

We have visited Eckenhagen quite a few times now with and without children and grandchildren. It has been a fun expedition every single time. Do not expect spectacular rides in million euro installations but do enjoy the closeness to the animals. Eckenhagen also has a huge indoor playground where kids of all ages find their amusement and exercise. Drinks and food are also available.
Eckenhagen town has a few good restaurants, check 'm out, you will not be disappointed.

Park of Birds and Monkeys located on Reichshof – Eckenhagen, a little town close to Cologne, that’s a 70 km trip. Inaugurated in 1972, now has more than 1000 animals and it’s a paradise for children's 'cause most of animals do not stay in cages and a lot of beautiful birds fly over our heads. We can feed almost all the animals, like goats, otters and ostrich, but it’s important pay attention to the signs because they can’t eat everything. The park has a big area with aquatic toys, a vegetable garden, a game room, etc. They have two great restaurants and open every day including holidays.
