My friend and I booked a last min package holiday as we were looking for relaxation and fun in equal measure- sampling the traditional Greek food and leisure. We read both terrible and good reviews for this hotel, so had reservations and fairly low expectations. However, upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly and helpful staff who took our bags for us, while we walked the VERY short steep hill to the reception. We were offered a complimentary drink and showed to our apartment with sea and mountain views; absolutely breathtaking. The food was decent, with a wide variety (they cater with both local and British cuisines), the apartment / rooms were basic but very comfortable and clean, the drinks and hospitality, as well as the pool were all first class.
The walk to all 3 beautiful beaches is very easy- all within 15mins. Tavernas and restaurants are all of very good quality nearby to the hotel if you fancy an evening out- with Greek Dancing evenings on a Friday at Zygos Taverna.
We felt strongly about writing this review as our expectations were surpassed and feel that this hotel had a bad press; undeservedly so. Could not have asked for a better holiday, with sun, sea, and a warm, traditional Greek flavour. Efharisto!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea or a pool view

We went to the Elpida 30 years ago for our honeymoon, and returned last year to celebrate our 30th anniversary. We only booked a short stay as we weren't sure how much it would have changed. We were very pleasantly surprised, and wished we had booked for longer, so we returned again this year. Again, Nikos met us at 2:30 in the morning, with smiles and offering us drinks and food. We took him up on the drink as the transfer had taken a good 2 1/2 hours. I have seen reviews about the transfer time, but if you do your homework, you will know in advance, and it is well worth it ! The hotel, or village as it is now known, was clean and tidy, and the staff are out sweeping and cleaning every morning to keep it that way. They would always speak and smile. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. I had a reason to complain during my stay ( not the owners fault ) and it was very quickly dealt with. We had very noisy neighbours all around us, a group of about 20 German Students, who did not seem to sleep, but played their music and were banging doors through the night. Apparently there had been 9 other complaints, and despite the fact that they had been spoken to, they carried on. The group leaders were staying elsewhere in the village, and obviously had no control over them. Had they done their homework, I think they would have booked elsewhere, as all the other guest were either couples or families. I felt sorry for the owner having to take all these complaints, as he has no idea who will be staying at his hotel until they get there. We were moved to a larger apartment literally within minutes ! Reviews also comment on the fact that it is up a steep hill, and again, if you do the homework, you will know this before you get there. I would say, as someone has before me, that to get the wonderful views, you have to go up hill ! I looked forward to mealtimes as the food was great, and then to go and sit on the terrace with a glass of wine, and watch the sun go down over the bay.... Bliss ! Going all inclusive meant that we didn't spend much money. The only things we spent our money on was bus fares and ice cream ! The local buses are brilliant, very cheap and air conditioned. So, it was a wonderful holiday, in a very friendly place, and I would recommend this Hotel to anyone who wants a relaxed holiday in a beautiful setting.

Thank you for choosing Elpida Village for your 30th anniversary and making us part of this. And congratulations for keeping the flame for 30 years! I personally thank you for your kind words and I hope that all the changes that you saw were for the best. You know we try our best, for returning as well as new guests. Also, I would like to apologise for the noisy group of students. I am sincerely sorry for the inconvenience. I hope everything else made up for it. Thank you once more!

Just got back home after a week at the Elpida. There seems to be mix up about the hotel name, as it was Elpida Hotel in the past. Under new management it is now Elpida Village. We read in past reviews about the steep hill, and its true, but without it the amazing view would not be possible. So, its worth it. The hotel itself is nice, with pretty gardens, big pool, helpful staff and very nice food (specially considering its a 3 star). We were even taught how to make tzatziki at home! The nearby beaches, specially Voulisma are great. You can use the free hotel bus to get there. If we go back to Crete in the future, this is the hotel we will choose.

Best holiday ever at the Elpida village.. Fantastic apartments with beautiful views all around! Very friendly welcome on arrival (greeted with a lovely beer) and all through out our stay, the locals cannot do any more to help and make you feel at home.. Lots of pool entertainment through out the day, with various activities! Fantastic atmosphere, with a very traditional greek feel! Food is very tasty, with something different everyday! Also a well fitted out gym onsite.. everything you need! Staff are more than happy to arrange all sorts of outings that Crete has to offer! I would definitely recommend to couples and families as a fantastic all rounder for everyone! Cafe nero is available with delicious greek coffee and meze.. Raki is a local spirit, very strong but also delicious! We will be back :)

After reading some of the other reviews on here I was concerned we had made a mistake.
The hill is steep and the family rooms are at the bottom so hard walk up and down for anything, at the hotels main complex. Although aware of the hill before booking anymore than ten days would have been a grind.
Now the good.
Room 31 was spacious, huge balcony and clean with fantastic views, pool is a good size although floods a lot when the more foolhardy swimmers try and empty it with a series of crazy bombing runs. The hotel itself is nice and clean with good bar service, with a first come, first serve attitude no matter what your nationality much to the annoyance of some of the Eastern European and Russian guests.
The food was o.k, although as said on here before could do with labeling to prevent wastage. I am quite a fussy eater but 8 out of the 10 days we were there I found something to eat such as my most adventurous meal Rice stuffed Pepper and good ol' chips. The area is very scenic but as said before fairly remote. Good bus service to and from Agios Nicholos only 15 mins away and only 1.50 euros per person each way. Local bars thin on the ground but all appeared to welcome new faces, even the small taverna / cafe used by the local old boys. There is a take away about 10 mins walk from the hotel just past commotions bar on the left which do a fantastic giros for only 3 euros or so.
