Batanes Seaside Lodge and Restaurant
Ranked #7 of 10 Basco B&B and Inns
Reviewed 22 August 2014

Likes: Cheerful and friendly staff, early check-in, working aircon and hot shower!

Dislikes: Price is not cheap compared to other lodges in Basco. Does not include breakfast. The toilet drainage is not working. No bike rentals. Food is pricey and just average. Renovation ongoing.

However, the island itself is a fantastic getaway vacation!

Our flight got cancelled so we got stuck in Batanes for two more days. There is no power in our previous accommodation so we asked the airline to transfer us to a hotel with a generator, hence they booked us at Batanes Seaside Lodge.

I am not so sure about their rates since we did not pay for anything but they are more expensive than our previous lodge- that's why we were not pleased with their amenities. We stayed at a room in the lower ground floor, since they said that's the last available room. Unfortunately, the generator is also located in the lower ground floor, and the noise made it hard for us to sleep at night.

The furnishings are basic-just a twin size bed and a single bed, a/c (but since we're running on generator, we can't use it), a tv, a dresser and a chair. The electric fan was very rusty, and I mean REALLY rusty, I hope they replace it soon because it seems that it has outlived its usefulness. Next is the CR. The tiles are grimy and it's already emitting a dank smell-actually the whole room smells unpleasantly moist and humid. I hate to compare, but since we stayed at a cheaper yet nicer place (but without a generator) you could find nicer, cleaner, and cheaper lodges in the area.

I guess the plus points are the location (you get an ocean view, and quite near to the airport), it has a generator and wifi, which came in handy while waiting for our special flight back home.

The staff are nice enough, the food so-so (quite repetitive but I guess they didn't expect to have extra guests), but I liked their fish lumpia. :) This place is probably ideal if you are in a big group, since the nicer inns only have a few rooms.

Room Tip: Don't choose the rooms at the lower ground floor. If possible, ask for a room with the ocean vie...

We stayed here as part of a packaged tour that included flights, transfers, tours and driver/tour guide that cost about P12,000 (approx USD280). Our room (Room 15) was located at the lowest level and could sleep 3 people comfortably with one double bed and one single bed going for about Php1,800 to 2,200/night (USD 40-50) depending on the season. It is adequate for what you need it for: a place to sleep after a hot tiring day of sightseeing.

The room is reasonably clean with very good air conditioning. It is supplied with complimentary towels, soap and toilet paper. No complimentary water but if you have a bottle, you can refill it in the hotel's dining area. The bathroom wasn't too clean. The walls had bits of grime but the toilet seat looked new. There is a "tabo" (dipper) and a spray nozzle "bidet". There is a heater for hot water showers with good water pressure. My concern is that the plug for the heater is very close to the shower and electrocution is a real issue. There is also an exhaust fan.

There is complimentary breakfast which you order the day before. There is unlimited instant coffee/chocolate drink. Their tapa and "one day" daing made from flying fish made locally were good.

The hotel also provided the tour/transportation/driver/guide. The staff were friendly and more than happy to help you with your requests.

A friend booked a package trip with this hotel in June 2013 and we got there December 2013.

We were told that a day trip to Sabtang Island--- one of the highlights of the trip for the traditional village and the feel of land's end, etc.---- had to be cancelled. They claimed that it fell on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8). And, they said that there were superstitions about crossing the sea and inviting mishaps. Right.

They had five (5) months to anticipate, prepare for and inform us about the cancellation but they did not! They do so the day before the trip when we couldn't do anything about it anymore---- cancel the trip, ask of refund, etc. It's being held hostage to a deal that has turned sour. Not nice.

Unfair and unprofessional. And deceptive.

They substituted the Sabtang trip with lunch, a boat cruise and a trip to another traditional village in the mainland (Batan). The substitutes were good but NOT good enough to offset the let down.

It's really about meeting or exceeding the client's expectations (as agreed upon in the package brochure and PAID for). It's disappointing to anticipate a trip to somewhere out of the ordinary only to be pulled back to the reality of excuses and plain non-transparency (heck, dishonesty) about commercial transactions.

PS: The manager/owner did not even bother to explain the matter to us in person even when we requested and WAITED for it. The staff, who did not have the decision making authority, was left to hand-wring and make all sorts of excuses. Unprofessional. At least be brave enough to own up to a mistake or mix-up.

Room Tip: Not much choice in the food or room.

We reserved a van for our use on May 17-18 for our stay in Batanes. We specifically informed them that we are a group of 11 pax. They made us wait and only to find out later after about 2 wasted hours that their van was only good for 6 pax. No point person to talked to. Very unprofessional staffs. Better to stay at Amboy Hometel or Bernardino's hotel or Octagon hotel.
