Was passing through and a friend recommended to stay here. Unfortunately all rooms were booked out for the Saturday night. Hotel interior was really nice. Will definitely be making a trip out here again to stay here.

A friend and I booked 2 nights at the Anchorage Port Stephens as a weekend getaway from Sydney.

The beds are very comfortable, bathroom was clean and the dressing gowns are super soft. Just be aware if you want to unpack, that there is a wardrobe but no drawers; when we mentioned this to the receptionist at checkout she said that they often get the same feedback but said that the rooms "were designed without drawers".

Breakfast had lots of delicious options, and the food from the Galley Kitchen that we tried was also good.

However, what lets the Anchorage down is the service. I don't know if it's because staff changes seasonally and they have part time/ temporary staff a lot of the time but what could be a 5 star property is brought down to about a 3.5 by the combination of many small things that, added together, all make a difference:

*Room service arrived for 2 people with only 1 set of cutlery
*Service by the pool was very slow and when they did bring our food out the staff ignored the other guests trying to order, on more than 1 occasion
*Prices within the hotel are much much more expensive than other local restaurants (of similar and higher quality)
*We had a query with our bill and the lady on reception had clearly not been trained to deal with any kind of hiccup
*They do not replace the complimentary bottle of water in your room
*Only 1 set of toiletries for 2 people in the bathroom
*Zero assistance when we asked for local walk suggestions or any nearby wineries (we only asked because the website or one of the pieces of marketing in the room had said the staff could make suggestions)
*Very grumpy waitress at breakfast (and you have to pay extra for certain types of coffee even if you have paid for a breakfast included option)

If I returned to Port Stephens I would try some cheaper local accommodation - sadly I didn't feel that the Anchorage was good value.

Dear Sir or madam,

Thank you for your sharing your experience, Whilst we are pleased that you enjoyed the room amenities, including our beautiful robes, it is disappointing to hear that we did not meet your expectations in some areas. We have spoken with the relative departments and are working on providing solutions to your concerns.

We hope that we can welcome you again to the Anchorage.

We stayed one night in an entry level room & were impressed with the size, comfort & facilities. This is a beautiful resort that has a boutique feel & we will definitely be back for a longer stay! Staff were friendly & helpful.

We arrived to a good welcome from the reception staff, along with a great room. We had only booked the garden view. But never the less it had a great outlook. The views from the pool area are stunning. Makes us wish we had booked longer than the one night on our trip north.

Stayed two nights for a conference.
The hotel has been recently renovated, with some work still underway.
Located on the waterfront, with excellent views of the port, and adjacent marina, it would be my pick as a base. The only other hotels in its class in Port Stephens are the Shoal Bay Resort and the Salamander Shores resorts.
Be aware that it is not "in town", so you are limited to the (excellent) on site restaurant and bar if you don't want to travel.
Also, the rooms are quite varied, with some accessible by stairs only, with some also having mezzanines as well, so choose wisely if access is an issue.

Room Tip: Lots of room types, so check carefully before booking.
