We stayed at Alpen Hotel Post for an entire week.

We are motorcyclists and we particularly appreciated the excellent facilities offered for bikers as well as the great motorbike circuit tips provided by the hotel boss, Christian. One can also find several binders in the hotel lobby with lots of tours to discover.
The Bregenzerwald area is a motorcyclist's dream, with clean roads, beautiful landscapes and lots of bends...

The hotel: very modern, comfortable and ideally situated in the heart of Au. Although it is on the main street, it is not noisy at all, as trafic remains very reasonable.
Our room was light, big enough for 2, with a balcony and a large bathroom.
The hotel bar and restaurant are particularly nice and cosy.

The restaurant: we opted for the half-board.

At first, we were a bit anxious to eat in the same restaurant every evening ("what if the food is not good..?") and also about the fact that it was a 5-course dinner each time.

But as from day 1, we did not regret our choice at all: the food was truly excellent, always nicely presented and colorful, and the size of the portions was very reasonable, so that we never felt full at the end of the dinner. Every morning, we found a leaflet on our breakfast table, with 3 main dishes and 3 desserts to choose from for the evening meal, and for 8 days, we were never offered the same choice (congratulations to the chef for that as well). There was always a choice of meat, fish and a vegetarian dish. The food was very varied, fresh, and cooked with a creative touch. Another important point: there was never too much sauce or fat at all, we found that dishes were prepared in a very healthy way.

Beside a couple of small starters, you also always have access to a freshly prepared salad buffet, with a selection of about ten different items. Fantastic.

Good Austrian wines selection (also by the glass).

So as one has probably gathered, we were quite impressed with the quality of the half-board.

As impressive was the breakfast buffet, as fresh and varied as the rest: fresh fruits, various yoghurts, muesli, breads, jams, juices, local cheeses and cured meats, smoked salmon...and good coffee.
Everything to start your day the best way, especially when you are a sporty person (the hotel also attracts many mountain bikers and hikers).

The hotel is also known to be very welcoming for families with small children. The atmosphere can therefore be quite lively at times, especially on the outisde playground situated next to the terrace, or sometimes during dinner time, but, as a couple, this has never proved to be of any disturbance to us and all went fine. Most importantly, as of 9:30/10 pm - a reasonable time - children were all asleep and our nights were very quiet.

Everyday, lots of various activities (many of them free) are offered - check the week's calendar at the desk. We also particularly appreciated Au's outdoor swimming pool, situated at about 10 minutes on foot from the hotel (entrance is free if you have the Bregenzerwald Card, provided if you stay more than 3 nights at the hotel. This card also offers free access to several local cable cars and buses).

Last but not least, the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful, always keen to answer your queries and advise you.

We enjoyed our time at Hotel Alpen Post very much and we would definitely like to come back.

This hotel offers bikers everything that is listed on the web site . Good location ,great food and comfortable accommodation. We were very pleased with the security for our bikes and It is in easy reach of all the great roads.
The bad points
We did not feel welcome for the duration on our stay. The kids running around and screaming in the restaurant spoiled our stay .If do stay do not have room 205 or a room over looking the seating area as you cannot relax due to ping pong, cart racing ,and shouting going on everyday.
I would not recommend this hotel if you want to ride your bikes and the relax when you return.

Room Tip: Do not have a room facing the seating area,Ask for another table away from the half board / kinderga...

We had a very nice time in the hotel with our 1,5 year old daughter. The facilities are cosy and clean. The staff is very nice and helpful, even with a lot of kids running around. We especially appreciated that during the 4-5 course dinner, which was obviously too long for our daughter, she could walk around, play at the reception and when she got lost (2-3 times), the waitress brought her back with smile. There is always something for the kids during the dinner like peas, carrots, chicken, potatoes, rice, pasta, soup, frites, nuggets...
Kids can use indoor playing room, outdoor playgorund, tricycles, swings, ... We stayed in a junior suite which was large enough for three, with possibility to be divided into two parts.
We used the indoor pool, which was quite nice (but do not expect such size that you could swim in there).
From MTB point of view, we were also very satisfied. Our bikes were safely stored in the garage, with possibilities to wash, use of repair stand + basic tools. Every day there is an offer of guided tours (the hotel owner is one of the guides) in 3 performace groups (up to ca 800, 1500 and above 2000 height meters, if I remember correctly). I took 2 tours during the week, both excellent. The other days we went either on bikes along the river with our daughter in a trolley (you can borrow one at the hotel if you don't have your own), or by bus to take a trip with one of the cable cars in surroundings (we received a "Bregenzerwald Gastekart" with our chekc-in, which entitles the holder to free use of buses, cablecars and swimming pools in the valley). The bus stop is right next to the hotel, so you do not need to use your car for the during tho whole stay.
Child carrier (backpack) can also rented rented at the hotel.
I would especially recommend a trip to Diedamskopf with small children - there is an outdoor playground as well as indoor air-conditioned playing room of ca 100m2 (both almost at the top of the mountain at the altitude of ca 2400m)m so parents can enjoy the hiking trip and children the fun at the playgorund.

We really appreciated this hotel. The staff are welcoming and do their utmost to respond the needs of guests. We asked to change rooms and despite being almost full they found a bigger room for us.
Breakfast is copious and delicious - comes in a buffet.
Dinner also comes with a buffet salad plus dishes from the menu. Excellent food and drink served by efficient, smiling staff.
The bed was comfortable and you sleep in total silence. Fantastic views from the hotel too.
The pool is warm, and there is a little separate pool nook if you don't want to be with the families.
For bikers, you can leave your trailer in the garage for free, and the car which costs a reasonable €5 per day. There are very many mountain passes within one day's ride in beautiful scenery. This hotel makes a great base.

Awesome boutique-style hotel in the quaintest part of Western Austria. Spacious & comfortable rooms, great restaurant and ample parking. Stayed there for 3 nights with friends and fam and had a wicked good time.

The skinny: the hotel is situated a little outside the town of Au (which is really just a small village itself) so don't expect a lot of shopping right at your doorstep. Groceries and ski rentals are within walking distance, though. Also, there is a ski lift right above the hotel but it's suited for kids and beginners only - however, there are some major resorts within 10 and 30 minute drives (take the local bus to avoid parking headaches if you head to the slopes a little later in the day). Well-maintained easy and challenging cross country trails go within footsteps past the hotel and outside ski season there is great cycling and hiking for all levels (didn't get to do any of that in March, though...). The local bike path system extends for miles in either direction and is well maintained and suited for running and rollerblading, too - however, during winter season those paths are used for x-country skiing.

The restaurant at the hotel is excellent and there are a number of other great restaurants in Au and the neighboring town of Schoppernau and Mellau.

Tip: when driving stick to the speed limit. The local police seems to enforce the limits quite rigorously and apparently uses photo radar and speed guns daily.
