plus points: The room was very clean, nice touch a little living plant in a vase in the bathroom brought a goot feeling abou it. Helpful staff. spacious rooms with huge, comfi matraces (in a twin, do not know about the double). Clean and big enough swimming pool.
Minus points: Front desk area is dated and does not feel welcoming. Breakfast buffett did not impress me. Variety was just about ok, but warm dishes did not look fresh, juices were of a poor quality and coffee was weak. The chairs at pool site were parshly broken.

Two Merlins..one run down, one very posh.
We stayed in the old Merlin but was told we could use the facilities of the new in Patong. It worked out we had best of both worlds.
The free bus took us to Patong merlin by the beach and access to the lovely pools at 11am ever morning and return trip at 3pm when they pick up their workers . We get to walk round Patong and the beach in the afternoon and leave it behind in exchange for the beautiful lovely old down town Phuket in the evening. Downtown Phuket is full of quaint buildings and cafes , even the pavement is beautiful.. food is cheaper, more varieties and it’s cleaner and not full of massage parlours and touristy stalls.its all within walking distance of the Phuket merlin!
Phuket merlins run down. The poolside is not worth looking at... but the room is spacious, the bed superbly comfortable and the bathroom shower is powerful. Everything works and the housecleaning keeps the room clean every day. Cannot complain.
We didn’t eat at the hotel . There are cafes just round the corner and a little cafe that sells noodles, etc that’s popular with the locals. I coffee round the corner does best cappuccinos for 55baht as oppose the ones in Patong for 130baht.
People are honest and you don t feel ripped off.
I would stay at this old hotel any day.

When I arrived, i booked a transfer from the airport to the hotel. The driver and transfer rep were late and took the long way round to the hotel. They were very helpful with my suitcase and offered me a free orange juice upon arriving at the hotel which was nice. The room itself was basic but the bed was really comfortable. You need someone who speaks at least some basic English so foreigners can communicate with the staff.

The hotel does need updating but the room i stayed in was great, a big room good bed, good tv and a great bath room. The shower was so powerful. Breakfast was poor, first day they cooked me eggs next day they had eggs fried in a tray cold - not good. The meals themselves were ok.

This was probably a nice and grand hotel in it's time but it really needs some tender loving care - also on some days not every day but certainly 4 of the 6 days we were there - a horrible smell permeated the hallway - we were on the 7th Floor and it was just awful - hubby thought it was coming from the ventilation system - but if you close the bathroom door whilst in the room and turn of the air con it was a bit better. However, the staff where quite friendly. Don't think we will stay there again though.
