If you want a get-away in a beautiful patch of Italian wine country with good food, good wine, lovely landscape and quaint towns, then Piedmont is for you. And there is no better place to stay than Cascina Sant'Eufemia, near Sinio. Because it is just over the technical border from the Barolo region, it is cheaper and less heavily touristy than places in nearby towns. Yet, you are 5-15 mins away by car from any place you might ever want to go in the region. And, most importantly, the atmosphere and attitude established by the lovely, friendly, easy-going couple that run the place is perfect. There is delicious breakfast every morning, pleasant conversation, if you so desire, with the hosts or other guests. THe hosts have great advice about local food and hikes and towns, and they have that hard-to-find trait so rare in hosts: true hospitality. We never wanted to leave, and hope that fate brings us back to this wonderful, affordable, relaxing spot.

Room Tip: upstairs rooms are a bit better. there is a nice one with kitchenette downstairs and bedroom upstai...

The room we had was spacious with beautiful antique furniture. Our hosts where more than accommodating, giving advice on local activities and places of interest that could fill a week, but we could only stay three nights. Highlights for us, breakfast- different treat every day, the winery tour filled with passion and family history, local walks, and basically feeling very welcome. It was great to buy local produce on site, which was about sharing the local area with their guests.

My wife and I spent our 2nd night in Italy here and can't say enough about Chiara and Paolo and their beautiful place in the Piemonte countryside. The rustic yet modern accommodations are befitting a 400 year old farmhouse and are most comfortable. They, however, set Sant'Eufermia apart from most others. Paolo greeted us warmly, introducing us to the dogs and cats, and fielding most graciously my many questions about their hazelnut trees and hillside vineyards. His help in arranging a nearby dinner reservation was done with ease and experience as judged by the perfect meal. Chiara's breakfast is not to be missed, the piece de resistance being the hazelnut cake. Paulo's 2008 Nebbiolo D'Alba should be tasted as well. The bottom line is that they are both passionate about their Piemonte home and making guests feel as if it's theirs. Sharing a basket of a mother cat and her 5 two week old kittens brought an Australian, German, and US couple to all sigh "Awwhh" together. Now that's what a B&B should do!!

Our first trip to Italy, a two week vacation and a time to remember. Our stay at Cascina Sant'Eufemia was made possibe by family (LarryandDarcy) who discovered this little piece of paradise and shared it with us. An unforgettable vacation, an unforgettable place, and two wonderful people, our hosts Paolo and Chiara, who made us feel like part of a family. The accomodations are clean and comfortable. Breakfasts are an event shared with other guests, beginning your day with good conversation and great local food as well as home baking and great coffee. Touring this part of the Italian wine country was a great experience. Our vacation was made very special by these gracious people and we hope to return again and again, always including this special place in our plans.

So this was our second visit to Sant'Eufemia. It says something about a place when you keep coming back. And says more when you choose to share it with friends and family. This time my brother Mike and his partner Donna joined us.

In addition to rediscovering the hills and valleys and wines of the Langhe on our tandem bicycle, we were once again made feel welcome and at home by Paulo and Chiara (as well as Dodo, Maska, Pedro and a new addition to the menagerie - Minou;-)

The rooms were as we remembered, clean and comfortable, and the breakfasts plentiful and made that little bit special by the addition of Chiara's baking and some local meats and cheeses.

It was harvest time this trip and we were lucky enough to help with the hazelnuts as well as some of the grape harvesting. We were also able to share a meal with our hosts and some of the other guests in the near-by town of Murazzano, as well as a day in Recco (home of the world's best foccacia) and another fabulous meal of seafood in Celle Ligure. Despite all the rooms being full and it being harvest-time, Paolo and Chiara took great care of the the four of us.

I have to admit, Darcy and I were a bit apprehensive that Mike and Donna would find Sant'Eufemia and our hosts as delightful as we did, but I think it's safe to say the ambiance, the cycling, the food and the wine were only matched by the warmth and attention we received. They liked it enough they're planning to be back in 2015, and we'll be returning this year with four other couples in tow.

One of the nicest things about agriturismos like Sant'Eufemia is you are effectively staying in someones's home. What you might lose in typical hotel amenities is more than made up for by the connection you can establish with the people and the land. That's why we keep going back.
