Visited Portmoak Moss today with my wife. This is yet another of these places that we had heard about but hadn't visited before.
Portmoak Moss is just west of Scotlandwell in Kinross-shire. The main entrance is reached from an access track off the B920. There is a small parking area halfway along the track.
This turned out to be a really enjoyable walk, interesting too. It was quiet, peaceful, and relaxing. There's some beautiful woodland combined with one of the last surviving raised bogs in Scotland. There are stairs over the peat bank at different places. The exposed wall of peat was created by local people cutting into the bog for fuel over centuries. Dead trees have been left to provide homes for insects and fungi and perches for birds of prey.
The circular walk around Portmoak Moss is approximately one mile and should take about half an hour, but this will depend on how many times you stop to look at different areas.
If, like us, you like peace, tranquillity, a relaxed atmosphere, and nature, this could well be a walk which you would enjoy.
