Vigdis and I were emailing over the week prior to our visit, which initially was supposed to be only for the nighttime bioluminescent kayak tour and not a stay in the lodge. But we had car problems that required us to extend our trip. Vigdis was so nice and accommodating in helping us rearrange and not feel stressed that our plans were not going to plan! We are so glad that things got goofed up, otherwise we may not have stayed at the lodge and missed out on the tranquil views, delicious meals, and socializing with the dogs, cats, and howler monkeys.

The bioluminescent kayak tour is an absolute must! Moving your hand or paddle in the water creates a fairy-dust light show! So amazing.

The meals were incredible, especially the fresh-caught fish provided by Thomas and guests who had gone off-shore fishing during the day.

I would definitely suggest that travelers add a stay here to their itinerary. It is so close to the Paquera ferry on the Nicoya Peninsula and is very easy to get to.

We stayed in the Bahia Rica Jungle lodge for our very last night in Costa Rica, what a great stay it was! We had the lodge to ourselves and it was so peaceful. In the middle of the jungle, no neighbours only wildlife. We slept extremely well, even taking an unexpected nap on their hammocks after only being there for a few hours. It is quite a few stairs down to the beach and to Bahia rica's restaurant, but there is a communal kitchen in the lodge so you can bring your food and cook your own meals as well. The breakfast that Vicky made for us the next morning was delightful. Thomas and Vicky are great hosts and we really enjoyed our stay. The morning that we were leaving (thanks for helping us with the ferry and bus information - we made it to the airport on time) we saw a troop of 12 or so howler monkeys right outside the lodge, it was such a unique experience to see this right in front of you - one that we will remember forever. Thanks again for a great stay, we highly recommend this lodge if you're looking for somewhere peaceful to stay! As expected in the jungle, pack your bug spray you will definitely need it! :)

I had spent one week with with Thomas and Vigdis and only thing I can complain is the pain in my arms from lifting fish after fish. Good equipment, and passion for fishing ensures you get the fish you are after than there is always the surprisingly tasty food package prepared by Vigdis when you are tired.
First day we got around 30 fish mostly jacks and spanish mackarel
second day we got two roosters and a couple travelly lot of other fish
third day I was alone on the boat with Thomas and we got over 80 jacks, 3 roosters, travellys, gar fish
4 day we got sailfish and dorado

Thoams & Vigdis are excellent hosts and have alot of passion for what they do

First off, I want to say that Vigdis and Thomas are amazing hosts and really made our stay there a joy!

We stayed two nights total, one on the property, and one on a nearby island in hammocks. The one night on their property we stayed in what I have to call a tree house... it was literally made out of the nearby trees! It was also in the middle of the most beautiful tropical places I have ever been too, just a staircase away from the water and we loved it! There were so many howler monkeys and wildlife to watch which just made it better! Just an FYI though, this is a jungle and you will need mosquito repellent and there will probably be some bugs, but it was nothing we couldn't handle.

The main reason we traveled here however was for the bio-luminescence in the Gulf of Nicoya... if you have ever seen the movie "The Life Of Pi" just think of the part of the movie where he is in the open water at night and the water starts sparkling...that is almost exactly what it looks like! No joke! The water actually sparkles every time you touch it or move your kayak in it! This is one of the few places in the world where you can see the phytoplankton that create this amazing phenomenon and it is truly a magical experience.

To see the bio-luminescence, we decided to upgrade a bit and do the overnight kayak trip to a nearby island and stayed in the coolest hammocks on the planet (they had their own mosquito netting!). Waking up swaying on a coconut tree in a very comfortable hammock overlooking the sea is one of my favorite memories ever. This was truly a once in a lifetime trip and I highly recommend it!

We spent two wonderful days in the house above the cozy little bay with the picturesque rock. The reason to come here was the bioluminescence in the gulf of Nicoya that is absolutely amazing and starts in the water right in front of Thomas and Vigdis property. We took the night kayak tour and it was one of the highlights of our tour through Costa Rica. The water really sparkles!!! This alone would be worth the trip to Bahia Rica. The guesthouse is simple but clean, decorated with love and in the middle of nature. We saw a family of howler monkeys right in front of the veranda and hummingbirds in the garden. Vigdis is a wonderful cook and we enjoyed both breakfast and dinner. As in other places it is good advice to bring some mosquito repellent.
