My husband and I visited Costa Rica for the first time and stayed at this resort for the first four nights of our trip. I went in expecting this to be an above average hotel but not luxury like we have had in other countries. We knew this coming and hence were not surprised at the simple but clean room. Check-in was easy and staff were friendly.
Room: we had room 102 (King bed) and it was SUPER close to the ocean. You could hear the waves at night and that was wonderful. This room had an outdoor hot tub that looked dirty and we did not use it. Outside our room there was a hammock and easy/short walk to the pool and ocean. Room had small fridge (which we used because we went to the grocery store often), safe, functioning AC. Nothing fancy, we knew this.
Grounds: they have beautiful tropical plants/flowers that you walk through to get around. Later in the day it looks "messy" but it's because these trees/flowers shed all day. They cleaned the pools and swept in the morning. The loungers are fine. they have some nicer ones that are up on decks that are close to the ocean with attached palapa for shade. The beach had lounge chairs that were not great (you could not really adjust) and they could put up a palapa by your chairs for shade. Just ask them. The beach was for us the main attraction and the reason we would come here. It is peaceful, soft and wide. This is NOT a surfing beach but rather calm water since this is in a cove. We liked that. We could walk in either direction but not much longer than 1.5miles overall. The view in this beach is very pretty. You have mountains, islands, boats (not many in front of the hotel), foliage and soft dark sand.
I got into the pool to cool off but honestly did not use the swim up bar or stay in the pool for very long. Occupancy was slow so nothing here felt crowded.
Restaurant: we only had breakfast since it was included and the dinner menu did not look impressive (plus was pricey). Breakfast was boring, same thing practically every day. I had seen a menu online that included like 6 breakfast choices (including oatmeal/yogurt). Right now we had 4 choices and they sounded all the same. I had pancakes one day to change it up and they were not warm and tasted like they came from McDonalds. Not good. The staff are not overly attentive either. We would get there soon after opening and at times would ignore us for 10 minutes (they did bring coffee and water). The last day I was willing to pay for a better breakfast but the Shack was not opening until later and we just came back to the hotel restaurant (sadly). Juice came from a bottle, fruit was about the only thing that was good and I wished I could have had a bigger plate of fruit only.
Go and eat elsewhere, at least for dinners. Go to the grocery that is close by for fruit and snacks to keep in your room. The Beachhouse restaurant (if you are facing the hotel from the beach, it is on the right side, about a 10 minute walk on the beach) was AMAZING!!! Fresh seafood and excellent drinks. The Shack also did not disappoint.
Again, I would come back here for the beach and the relaxed/chill environment we were seeking. I would eat all my meals at the Beach House if I could!More
