We had the pleasure of dining at the Smokin Pig during our stay in Las Catalinas. I had read so many rave reviews about the food and was thrilled to learn the Pig would be open for one night during our stay (closed for green season). We ordered the sampler plate (brisket, ribs and pulled pork) and were not disappointed. The meat was smoked to perfection, tender and flavorful. The sides were just as delicious as was the pecan pie desert. They literally have the coldest beer offered in Potrero! Cold beer and delicious bbq -winning combination. Amy (the pit master) and Jill (Amy’s mom and manager) work so well together and have a passion for food and connecting with their customers. Do not miss out on a fantastic meal at the Smokin Pig!!

We had an amazing meal with our family and many friends! The service was prompt and accurate and the food was amazing! The BBQ ribs were to die for, and the sides were great as well. There was live music and the musician made the evening even more fun. I would recommend this restaurant! Loved it!

The Smokin’ Pig
Serving up the best BBQ and Blues in Costa Rica

Right next door to Super Wendys, the previously mentioned food emporium, is a rather nondescript little building with a banner type sign signifying it to be the Smokin’ Pig, BBQ Restaurant. We determined to at least have a look and try it out. So one evening we drove over there, parked in the little parking lot and walked to the building. As it happened there were two “good ol’ boys” seated at a small table on the edge of the parking lot smoking and, no doubt, solving the problems of their world. Being friendly fellows they greeted us, we were obviously not locals, and asked if this was our first visit to the Smokin’ Pig. Our affirmative response generated a very entertaining commercial about how good the restaurant was and they itemized the dishes they thought were the best. Entertaining and informative. It begged the question of whether these guys were part of the staff.
Thus bolstered we entered the establishment to be greeted by a well dressed gentlemen in a beautiful room shaped like the inside of a pyramid. He seated us and took our drink orders. The walls of the pyramid, of which there were only two, were covered with signs proclaiming we were to be served the best BBQ and Blues in Costa Rica. Posters of BB King adorned the walls and the background music was, of course, blues. The other two walls were about one meter high and the rest was wide open.
We opted for a glass of wine which soon appeared, chilled and in a large glass. What a refreshing change from the little sip of wine we are served at home. The server soon returned to take our food order. We opted for the item listed as “Samplers! Great to share”. It contained a mound of pulled pork, several slices of brisket and some ribs. The boys out in the parking lot had recommended these dishes and, on their advice, we elected to try all three.
Wonderful, tasty food. Together with the “fixins” I am hard pressed to recall a time when such wonderful flavors came out of a relatively simple meal. The meat on the ribs literally fell off the bone. The pulled pork was excellent. The brisket was done perfectly, tender and a heavenly taste.
The piece’ de resistance was the owner of the establishment, Jill Webster, who arrived in Costa Rica from Michigan by way of Texas and New Mexico. She is a lovely lady who circulates throughout the restaurant greeting everyone and is just a delight to talk to. There were two tables of families there with young children and it was really nice to observe Jill interact with these people and the kids. It was fun for me too as one little guy, whose walking skills were still developing, managed to escape from time to time no doubt in search of his own adventures.
The kitchen and the BBQ pit is managed by Jill’s daughter, Amy, so it is truly a family business. They are closed on Tuesdays and are open between the hours of 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm the rest of the week.
Needless to say, like the “good ol’ boys” out front, I would recommend you try this delightful establishment when you are in the country.

The best smoked meats around! Can’t wait for them to reopen after green season. Don’t miss this place when visiting Potrero! You will be sorry ;)
