The remains of the monastic village and cemetery are lovely, but my best advice is to do the visitors centre first, as the signage in the village is not very good. You will have a better understanding of the significance of the structures and the background of the hermit who began all this.
The walks to the lake are not strenuous, but a relatively long hike. The views of the lake and surrounding mountains are beautiful.

Not only is this such an amazing piece of ancient history, it is also an active archeological dig! They are unearthing older sections and finding artifacts daily. The history of this monastery is just incredible and the historians working here are so knowledgeable and helpful.

We were staying at the nearby hotel and walked through the settlement on our way to Upper Lake. Such an interesting site, with so many buildings and stones to take in. Definitely worth a visit.

Many people visit just to visit the the monastic settlement and wander through the graveyard which is interesting however visitors should also take the opportunity to wander around the lakes and take in the beauty of the glen.

My family had told us to stop here for a visit. This was the first location we went to that we could purchase an OPI PASS. I inquired at the desk and the lovely lady at the desk asked how long we were staying and told us it may be too expensive to be worth it. We were staying for two weeks and I know I am a history junky and madwoman on vacation. If possible get this pass that allows entry to so many historical sites. Even if you only stay someplace for a short time you will have the opportunity to see so much more by getting a pass.

The grounds are beautiful and he surrounding area is lovely. We hiked several miles but there was so much more to see!
