We stayed here in the 3 bedroom bungalow for 10 nights in July 2011 and had THE most relaxing holiday. The extra space you have available when staying in a house as opposed to a hotel is what makes the difference when travelling with children(11 and 8). We could take food into the countruy from home and topping up with fresh food was never a problem. Our hosts Kathy and Mata were always friendly and available but never obtrusive - we would be back in an instant!

Room Tip: 3 bedroom great for families, 1 bedroom just as great for couples

A superb location with very congenial hosts Mata and Kathy. We would highly recommend a stay in their delightful bungalow!

we have stayed with mata and kathy every year since 2005, for the vaka eva races, but this was the first time at one of their bungalows.
the best!
quiet and peaceful, and time to visit with mata and kathy.
we will return this summer, and see what the weather is like that time of year.

We stayed in the 3 bed bungalow from 2/5/11 for two weeks, for our Daughters wedding and to have some R & R afterwards.
After gruling flights from WA it was awesome to find Mata had left the car at the airport for us as prommised and he greeted us on arriival. The bungalow was just perfect for us & our two sons who had a room each. The wedding was at the Rarotongan and only 3 min walk from the Vaikoi, When our friends found out about our "hidden treasure" they diidn't want to go back to their accomodation. Kathy & Mata have it "just right" every things there for you and so clean & tidy. No comments on beach down the road, everyone else has covered it. Snorkilng is great but kids wear reef shoes the coral bites. Just gota love those roosters ;-)

I don't want to say too much for fear we won't be able to get a booking again. Three of us adults travelled from Vancouver, BC. We stayed two nights in one of the one bedroom bungalows until the three bedroom bungalow was available. All accommodation was clean and modern with the bonus of a washing machine and outside clothes line for drying and one under the covered patio for those rainy days. Mata and Kathy are really lovely people. Mata was most enjoyable to talk to about island history, economics and politics. The beach across the road is breathtaking with the most amazing snorkelling right off the shore and hardly anyone ever on it. Vaikoi provides a kayak for use and we took full advantage of it. Within a short walk is the Rarotongan Resort for restaurant dining and Island Night entertainment on Wednesday and Saturday nights (they also have an ATM and gift shop with good prices), Budget car and scooter rentals, Coco Putt mini golf and restaurant, The Dive Shop for dive and snorkelling rentals. We chose to rent a car for our entire stay. From Budget the car was $45 day (10 days plus). Scooters are $20 per day. The bus is $4 each trip, round trip is $7,day pass is $12 and book of 10 tickets is $25. Gas was $2.69 ltr. It cost us $85 to fill up the tank (which was still almost 1/4 full) on our little Suzuki car. We realized the scooters would be much easier to drive around but we heard from scooter renters that it is not very pleasant when it rains.....and when it rains it POURS. We had a great time at Coco Putt and the people are very nice with good food at the restaurant. The food and liquor is very expensive due to the cost of importing everything. The best place to shop is the market on Saturday mornings, where you will find locally made and grown items. This vacation was exactly what we were looking for.....a destination that has not been Americanized. By that I mean you will not find any fast food outlets here or Starbucks, etc. The Rarotongans are lovely people who enjoy a very simple, slow paced life and they are not about to change their way of life to suit outsiders needs. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation away from the hustle and bustle and a step back in time then I highly recommend the Cook Islands to you, but if you expect lavish style hotels and resorts (there are a couple but expect to pay $700 per night), are squeamish about co-habitating with large cockroaches and geckos (mokos), are irritated by being woken up by many roosters crowing (they start at 3AM and continue til noon), yearn for extreme sport experiences, designer shopping and fancy night life, then do not go to the Cook Islands.
