This was our first trip to Cuba. We are in our early 50s and love life. My sister in law is from a town by Varadero and my husband and I wanted to see this wonderful place. We also got to go to her niece’s quinceanera, awesome experience. We did our research, so we knew not to expect perfection. I don’t know how many ways I can say it was wonderful and beautiful. Yes, there were seats missing on some toilets, not in hotel room, but my sister in law grew up, her whole life, without one. This is not an Americanized country. This is not Hawaii, but it is a beautiful country with beautiful people. I do suggest that you be sure to check voltage at hotels before travel. I also suggest taking some late night snacks (cheezies travel well) and minor medical supplies, like polysporin, tweezers and such. Know- a small tip goes a long way, just like anywhere in the world. We noticed that a lot of people didn’t tip. All inclusive doesn’t mean you can’t be nice. I guess we are very Canadian lol. Many Europeans at this resort. I do truly wonder if they don’t tip in Germany and treat servers second class. Maybe that normal there. The staff in the Cohiba bar and the buffet were excellent and super nice, always a smile. As was our maid and most front desk and others. Security could stand to be more pleasant. It’s a great convenience to have ‘banking’, internet (small fee), and a convenience store on site. Our room was clean and modern. Our ac worked great. Always hot water too. Probably perks of traveling off season, less strain on the building. There are obviously upkeep issues as there is not a Home Depot around the corner. Don’t let a missing hall tile or an out light bulb wreck your stay. The buffet is quite good. You be less bored if you don’t ‘take a little of everything’ every day. The food is fairly plain but flavourful in a fresh way. If you like peanut butter or ketchup take it with you. We went to a great restaurant Club Waco off resort. Check it out! Yummy. We also went to an awesome club in Varadero, Calle 62. Going off resort you’ll notice a lot of restrooms have attendants to give toilet paper for a small tip. It’s not a horrible thing, just give them a peso and be happy. The beach was so wonderful, I can’t even begin to express how great it was. The nightly show was good/decent. I didn’t really know what to expect. The pool was very nice and frequently activities were going on. We think it’s a good idea to take a day for Havana too. Quite different from Varadero. If you like classical cars you are in for a treat taxis are classic cars and horse drawn buggies. It was a wonderful experience. Enjoy!
