Not one to write a review but here goes...Second trip to Cuba so kinda knew what to expect but yikes, the bad food, flies and heat was almost unbearable! Memories is a huge and I mean HUGE resort. In need of some serious up grades as most things were past their prime. The beds were hard, the chairs were worn out and there was rust on the bathroom fixtures .The food was bland and almost never hot! And whats with all the flies! Took bug spray so the mosquitoes left us alone...woohoo
Now the good stuff, the staff was friendly and the maids were too. We got clean towels every day and our mini bar was filled up daily too. The beach was clean and you could always find a spot on the beach. There was pleanty of drinks flowing although they did serve my 13yr booze a few times, but hey what happens in cuba stays in cuba I'd say!
Would I go back...ya no! Time spent with family was great but Cuba on a whole is MEH!
The best way to describe it is MEH!
But if u do go...bring the following.
1. Beach towel
2. Small girfts of the maids that clean yr room...pick up a few things @ the $ store
3. Travel cup for drinks! ones given at beach r way too small and flimsy!
4. Bug spray!
5. Lots of comfortable walking shoes...HUGE HUGE HUGE resort!
6. Hats!
Keep in mind its more a 3 star and you will be fine!

Room tip: block 37 was good location...close to beach

My husband and I just came back from a week at Memories Varadero. I am mystified by the terrible reviews written by some people who stayed there at the same time as us! We didn't experience any of the vacation-ruining problems that I keep reading about, and it makes me wonder if people have crazy expectations of luxury when they are going to Cuba and paying less than $1000 for a week all-inclusive!

Sunwing flight was no problem, and our check-in was a dream - we were whisked away to the private Diamond Club reception area, handed a mojito and a bottle of rum, and driven right to our ocean-view balcony room. Sue, the Diamond Club concierge, was wonderful. She arranged for vegetarian meals for me at 4 a la carte restaurants, which I greatly appreciated. Diamond Club is TOTALLY worth the extra money.

The beach and the ocean were absolutely gorgeous, clean, and it was never a problem to find shade. The beach was nice and quiet, not much loud music or activites (these were up at the noisy activity pool). We spent all of our time by the beach, and usually had lunch at the beach grill or grabbed a sandwich and fries by the activity pool. Drinks were plentiful and lots of variety available. The beach bar had a lousy selection, but it was easy to walk up to the bar at the beach grill, and about the same distance. Pina Coladas are dangerously delicious! And really good dark rum!

Our room was cleaned daily, clean towels provided daily, mini-fridge restocked daily. On my birthday they delivered a bottle of sparkling wine and a cake to the room - so nice!

I loved the live Cuban music at dinner, and in the courtyard before the nightly shows.

It's true that the food is just average, not the greatest variety or sophistication. And the mosquitos were terrible. And the resort needs some renovation. BUT - considering the price we paid we feel like we got excellent value and had a wonderful time.

I would say if you have expectations of luxury (while paying a ridiculously cheap price), Canadian-style food, no insects or wildlife, and Canadian-style amenities, you have no business going to Cuba. If you like a beautiful beach, good music, hot sun and a relaxed atmosphere, you'll have a great time at Memories.

Room tip: Go with Diamond Club ocean view balcony room if you can. We were in building 34, nice view and close to the beach.

I don't know how people can write bad reviews about this resort! My gf and I stayed just recently and we loved it! It was the 3rd time I was in varadero and it was the best resort I have been too. The service was great, Boris at the pool bar was the best and would do anything for the tourists. The lobby bar's service would be my only complaint. It is a very big resort, but they have carts that bring you where you want to go! The quiet pool is where we wanted to be so our room worked out perfect! I would go back to this resort again forsure. Maroldi our taxi guy was amazing and took us to Havana for a great price. He helped us with everything. If you want a tour call him, you won't be disapointed.

June is too hot and humid. To many flies and mosquitos. Way too many flies on the food for my liking. Resort is huge. Buffet was not bad it had a good variety at meals. Quiet pool was nice but could do with a good cleaning. Noisy pool is noisy but great for kids. Snack bar restaurants not bad. Entertainment also not too bad, have seen better. The resort is nice but not to be rated as a 4.5, it is only a 3.5. They are trying to improve it. Havana trip was nice. Jeep safari not so great, only so-so, have been on better ones. Have always travelled in Nov. to Cuba, we will never go again in June. We prefer Hoguin better. We love Cuba and the people.

Room tip: Rooms near the beach are the farthest from everything. Very quiet area. Not too far from the noisy pool. Farthest from the buffet. Half way for the entertainment building. No face cloths in the rooms. We had a suite it was very nice.

We have just come back from a two week stay at this resort and wish we had never set foot in it. The food was disgusting it was never hot and the worst was everything was covered in flies. Breakfast, lunch ,dinner ,pool side snack bar ,beach restaurant all the food had flies swarming on it nothing was covered. You name it salad, fruit, deserts, bread, meat waiting to be cooked, everything had flies over it. Despite complaints nothing much was done to sort it out. The table cloths were never changed so if they were messed up at breakfast you had the same table cloth at dinner time. There were cockroaches in the Italian ala carte and when my wine was poured a fly came out of the bottle with it. Disgusting. Needless to say we went down with food poisoning.

You were lucky to get your beach towels changed. The whole resort on first impression was shabby, glass and litter not being cleared up. The resort is huge we had a 10 minute walk to the main buffet hall and reception, buggies were few and far between, so if you are elderly or have difficulty walking don't go there. Waited 4 days for a light bulb in the bathroom to be replaced and the phone in the bedroom to work. The balcony door didn't lock so they gave us a piece of wood to put in the runner. The swimming pools were not cleaned and had suspect scum floating on top.

We were bitten from head to foot every day by Mosquitos as was
everyone else. I was using bug spray with deet in it. It was only in the second week that they started spraying outside, not sure it helped much.
We are disgusted that Thomas Cook rates this hotel as a 4 star as it certainly is not. We feel worse after this holiday than before we went which is not the idea of a holiday.
