Staying in San Juan one night before our "real" vacation in Culebra we decided to stay in a cool, old, elegant place. Villa Herencia was that place. In old San Juan VH lived up to the beautiful, old mystique of a centuries old city. The rooms were small, but the beds were comfortable, and the rooms were cool to combat the heat. The atmosphere transported you to another time. We would stay there again and recommend it to anyone loping for that special place.

My husband and I finished off our 8 day Puerto Rico island adventure celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary by staying the last 2 nights in Ild San Juan at the Villa Herencia. We knew we didn't want to simply tour Old San Juan, we wanted to immerse ourselves & get the complete experience so we researched & examined EVERY SINGLE hotel/B&B in Old San Juan for weeks- we couldn't have found a better place to stay! A month in advance, we phoned the staff for advice since we would have a rental car for the beginning of our trip to the island (and I am a bit OCD about making sure I know EXACTLY what to expect & to plan). Not only did they help us tremendously by suggesting to return the rental car PRIOR to coming into Old San Juan then taxiing to hotel, but they gave us wonderful tips & advice regarding many other aspects of our adventure and arranged taxi service for us at the end of our stay. Once in Old San Juan, we were greeted by the most friendly & helpful staff! The Villa Herencia is the most beautiful, charming, place we have ever stayed! We had an upstairs room and were a bit unsure after reading a review regarding steps & cats- but neither were an issue & so glad we didn't let that review keep us from staying here! Our room was perfect and we had the gorgeous rooftop patio to ourselves in the evenings (as there are only a total of 8 rooms in the entire place). Breakfast was just right to get us started each day, we walked to everything and thanks to the staff we experienced our favorite spot....The Passage Of The Princess. You HAVE to take a stroll there at night. If it had not been suggested to us, we would have never even known it was there & it begins right behind the hotel.
We are already planning out return trip & will be bringing our family this time. The Villa Herencia is where we will stay & have already recommended it to several friends.

This boutique style hotel is simply lovely!! We stayed here prior to our Southern Caribbean cruise and found it to be delightful. It sits on a quiet street in Old San Juan, but within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. The rooms are stunning! The public areas charming! The staff was gracious and very helpful. We loved every minute of our stay!

We love this hotel for its location in Old San Juan. On a charming neighborhood close enough to restaurants and shops yet far enough to feel like you are coming home at the end of your day.

The rooms have character, very much old world. As has been mentioned, they tend to be dark and not enough closet space. The bed is comfortable, and the shower is spacious. The bathroom furnishing have character, but some of it tend not to be too functional and wish it can be improved. For example, the mirror above the vanity is set a bit high for someone who is on the shorter side (5'3) and the edges have some design. It makes it a challenge to properly see your face while putting makeup on.

Wifi is fairly good in the room we were in, which was next door to the reception.

There is no in-room safe, which would be nice to have to store valuables while out and about.

The roof top terrace is a nice place to hang out in the late afternoons. We do however missed being able to hang out with the cats from next door. We are cat lovers and were really looking forward to being able to hang out with the friendly kitties like we did when we stayed here a few years ago. It actually was the deciding factor in choosing to stay here again, so this part was a bit disappointing for us.

Overall though, we were happy with our stay.

Dear Pigsterz - Thank you so much for your raving comments, we have adopted a new cat today, him name is Ortencio. We gave him to a local family for their care and are very happy for him. We have some pictures I wish you could see him, son absolutely gorgeous! Our neighbor has relocated the cats and we have fewer visitors now. There are however many cats around the Hotel and they are so very friendly.

We hope to see you back soon!

Villa Herencia is absolutely beautiful - the common areas, my room, the roof deck. It is not a high-end, luxurious hotel but its charm, decor, and staff make up for it. My room was on the ground floor and quite dark and while it was possible to open windows I would have lost privacy. It didn't bother me too much, though. The room was nicely furnished, with an awesome painting (cool paintings throughout the hotel), a comfortable bed, and a very cute, spacious bathroom. Everything was very clean. The staff is extremely nice and so welcoming. The location couldn't be better - it's right next to El Convento, a short walk to Castillo San Felipe del Morro, and a very short walk to the heart of Old San Juan. I loved it and can wholeheartedly recommend it.
