The Hotel El Convento is an old building that was a convent and is rumored to also have been a brothel. It is very well refurbished, in a beautiful part of Old San Juan, walkable to everything. Highly recommend it if you like hotels with personality, not like your standard chain hotels. It even had a second interior door which was soundproof so you didn't hear music from the interior courtyard.

This hotel is in an excellent location in Old San Juan. No car needed because you can walk everywhere! The atmosphere was so romantic and the decorations in the rooms are rustic and beautiful. The rooms on the first couple of floors have 20 feet ceilings and the hotel's restaurant has a great breakfast. There is also a wine and cheese hour (my husband enjoyed, because I was expecting) everynight where you can meet other guests. The roof top pool is small but it was not a big problem. There were weddings pretty much every night (we stayed June 9th-13th 2011) which made it more romantic. The staff and the man singing outside with a guitar, where all very nice. We had an excellent experience for our 1st time in Puerto Rico!

We stayed here the last night of our week long trip driving around PR. I've been to Old San Juan a few times previously, but never stayed within the city limits. We were tired after a week, so I'm a bit disappointed that we had to awake early from this world-class hotel to catch our flight. We arrived and parked with the valet, which is your only option unless you forego a car or park your vehicle in a garage (which may prove to be more pricey than the hotel valet). The staff were stellar and spoke fluent English. The front desk staff were great, but the bellmen were what set the hotel apart from the rest. They were young local guys and seemed more than concerned for not only our belongings, but for our stay within Old San Juan. They weren't looking for excessive tips, as they were quick to leave you after their duties were fulfilled. They were pleasant and caring to say the least.

The room was beautiful with windows (no screens) that opened to overlook this ancient gem of a city. The interior balconies/hallways overlook a beautiful garden & various restaurants. The hotel itself speaks volumes for what was once (and still is) the epicenter of the Caribbean. The nightly wine event/meet & greet is great, but anything but wine will cost you (we paid $6/Medalla) which is charged to your room. This matters not, since the atmosphere of this hotel is breathtaking. It's not beach front, but you're literally a 5 minute walk from the ocean. There is a small pool and jacuzzi on the roof with ample seating that is a spectacular bonus to an otherwise gridlocked city-esque locale.

We ate at the Tapas restaurant on site which was wonderful, albeit slow as far as service is concerned. The bill was reasonable, but the island time service lives up to it's name here (maybe they were short-staffed or uber-busy). Regardless, the surroundings are second to none since you are dining within the open & vast walls of the hotel (Coquis are abound here within an enclosed oasis which is El Convento).

The hotel was a convent in the 1500's and has since been restored. We had a perfect & calming view of the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista (c. 1521) which is the oldest standing cathedral in the U.S. & it's relevant possessions. It also houses the tomb of Juan Ponce de Leon who was the 1st governor of PR and the Spanish settler responsible for naming Florida, USA.

So, yeah....this hotel is that great. I picked this hotel due to the #1 ranking for hotels in PR and we weren't disappointed. This is THE place to stay while frequenting Old San Juan. I just wished we had the following day to explore. The hotel, staff and interior grounds are perfect and deserve a 2-night stay minimum to explore the city and this historic hotel.

Room Tip: We snagged a 5th floor room facing west which is less desirable since it overlooks the city vs. the ocean. I actually liked this better since we were ocean front for the rest of our trip. The city is gorgeous so if city-views are ok with you, your nightly rate will reflect economy pricing.

This storied hotel is the perfect place from which to explore Old San Juan -- you step right into it, avoid the parking problems if you are driving in, etc. Sophisticated shops and restaurants blend in with the beautifully restored buildings and historical relics. The courtyard of this old convent is a wonderful place to hang out and escape the heat: it's great for breakfast with the birds twittering in the enormous, ancient trees, it's cool and relaxing for a cocktail before siesta or setting off for dinner. It's quite pricey, but a memorable experience. Rooms are small -- as if some Catholic is punishing you or forcing you to turn inward -- but there is a faint touch of local flavor, wrought-iron touches, etc. Try to have a room facing onto the park square to avoid traffic noise.

El Convento is simply perfect. Its location could not be better, just opposite the cathedral in the centre of Old San Juan and within walking distance of the main historical sights.
But what makes El Convento so especial, is not just its excellent location, or the history behind it, neither the beautifully appointed rooms. Its the staff that gives life to this hotel and makes it so delightful. Each and every one was absolutely professional and yet so friendly, making sure we had a wonderful stay. We really enjoyed our stay and it will definitely be our choice next time we visit Puerto Rico.
