My friends and I ventured into Old San Juan for food and drink. We chose Barrachina for the sake of history. It is, afterall, the home of the original Pina Colada. We had a great dinner, but the reason to be here was for the classic cocktail first created in 1963. The drink was beyond expectations! No Pina Colada prior to this, tasted nearly as good. The original formula is a sublime concoction that pleasures the senses. Yes, come for the atmosphere, food and outstanding service... but you must have a Pina Colada!

For the second year in a row, my daughter, her boyfriend and I are cruising to the islands from San Juan. Though battered from the hurricane, the people remain resilient and friendly as repairs are underway. Street lights are gone in places making traffic tough but everyone remains good natured and things get done. While we are staying in Condado, we begin each day with a cab ride to Barrachina for their pina colada which has become our drink of the day. At $7 each they are tasty and refreshing and the bartender will put in as little rum as you request so it’s more like a fruity eye opener. Lest anyone think we’re a bunch of old rummies, we do partake of the complimentary continental breakfast the hotel offers prior to venturing out for the day. We use Barrachinas as our starting point each day as we tour the old town. Very happy to see many ConEd trucks from New York here helping rebuild the electric grid. Spoke with a worker who said they’re here for five week shifts and I give Governor Cuomo a big thank you. Off on our ship tomorrow so goodbye Barrachina, goodbye San Juan.

The self.proclaimed home.oc the Pina colada is a must stop in old San Juan to at least try their Pina colada. They have frozen virgin coladas and they pour the rum over the frozen drink and it was a refreshing take on one of my favorite drinks. They serve some Puerto Rican favorites like red snapper and huge pork chops. The chop was a bit dry for my preference but others seemed to enjoy the other dishes. I enjoyed the ambiance with a courtyward and parrots. The restaurant has two floors and serves lunch as well upstairs.
