Stayed in one of the STUDIO with a Sea view, terrace - double bed + sofa bed - kitchen; bathroom-TV, phone, it's called Cannelle.

Among the positives is the peace and quiet you will enjoy at this location. There are uninterrupted views over the forest out to the sea. The studio was of a good size and the free internet is welcome.

The owner while a lovely lady only speaks French, no surprise really. So that apart from the directory in the room there's no helpful advice given on arrival. You pretty much have to figure it out yourself.

The website needs to be upgraded as there are no directions to the location and when a reservation is made no confirmation email is sent. This is necessary as our airline wanted to see proof of our reservation but none was generated from the website.

The bed is too hard and the pillows uncomfortable. Both made for an uncomfortable night's sleep. You also had to sleep with all windows and doors closed because of the mosquitoes, a shame as there's such a nice breeze wafting thru the villa.

There seems to be a bus service but this stops at 5pm so advise you rent a car.

This place is wonderful for those who are looking for a self-catering home away from home.

I had one of the ground floor studios, spacious, full of light. The kitchen is small but has all the necessary facilities. The lawn in front of the studio has 2 easy chairs from which glorious sunsets can be taken in. The terrace is covered so one can eat outside even when it rains.

And it is quiet; no noise from the roads; no noise from the neighbors. However if one is allergic to the mating calls of the frogs, well, find someplace else.

For a feeling of cool, there is a fan which is quite sufficient, however if you need a/c, there is none.

The owner is a very nice local lady who treats you to goyavas from the tree and changes linen whenever one asks.

In the village below, l'Anse a l'ane, there a few nice eateries with very welcoming staff.

If you are a scuba diver, go to "Planete Bleue" at the "Pointe du bout".

A car is a must.

[And there is a friendly cat]

This is a nice self-catering place high on a hill over the ocean in a lovely garden setting and conveniently near to the ferry to Fort-de-France. Rooms are basic but pleasant and the staff is friendly and responsive. The price is reasonable compared with others in the area. The little beach is at least 15 mins away but it's a nice walk, and the village with a Huit-a-8, cafes and ferry is a fairly short walk down (or up coming back!) a very steep hill with cars whizzing by.

The only problem is access to the airport - it is 20 km away and taxis are exorbitantly expensive, especially at night. Buses exist but their schedules and routes are idiosyncratic. I asked the northward bound bus driver to go to the airport and the bus went via many tiny villages and eventually Diamond (south) where I had to change buses! It took over 2 hours to get to the airport! The best solution is to rent a car, which I did for arrival at night.

After that I thought I would do as many islanders do and rely on the ferry and taxis "collectifs" - sort of mini-buses. However their schedules are similarly unpredictable. Ferry schedules seem to change by the day, and the driver of the collectif taxi decided to take me, by myself, on a tour of the island, saying (despite my showing him the map repeatedly) that that was the way to my hotel - NOT!

But I think he really just wanted to take me for a drive and show off the countryside, as he didn't exact a huge fare for the "balada" (tour), just a friendly hug! Solo female travelers please note, be alert!

I also found out that if you want to go somewhere for the day by taxi collectif, even a town 20 km away, you have to get to F-de-F VERY early in the morning - otherwise you will miss the round-trip drivers, as I did, arriving at 10am.

The message is to live in the moment and enjoy whatever happens, just as the islanders do...it's a gorgeous place and everyone is very happy to see you or help you out. You should definitely be ready to pay for huge taxi fares or rent a car if getting places on time is important. But driving you are just in your car and you don't get to meet many people. Plus the traffic is pretty bad - lots of risky drivers and scary roundabouts!

But either way, les Martiniquains badly need tourist dollars. So please go, and have a great time!
Helena

PS. They don't speak Spanish, and hardly anyone speaks English either, so take your French dictionary! Better yet, learn some words of Creole.

The view is simply wonderful. Among the best I’ve ever seen.
We had ants in the room and as there is no air-condition there are too many mosquitos.
Many ants in the room.
The owner has two big dogs. They are nice but loose and one of them are barking a lot. Be prepared is you are afraid of dogs.
In general I can recommend the place, but I was happy that I limited my stay to two nights.

If you do not speak French this is a problem. We could convey nothing to our hostess who smiled, said something in French but nothing else. The only people who spoke any English were visiting from France. Corkscrew, cheese grader, dish soap was provided but no hand soap or real pillows. If you plan to stay more than a couple of days, as I had hoped, rent this place for two days and look around for signs. There are many for nice looking places. Car rental is highly advisable unless you love walking many kilometers. The location is remote so there is no place near to get buy anythings, especially and US electrical transforming device. Essentially this is a building that composes four 30' x 30 rooms sparsely built by someone on a budget in a lovely rustic location. Hope the other guests don't have loud children because there is no sound deadening on the tile flooring.
