El Momo Cottages
Reviewed 19 June 2011

I enjoyed two days and nights in December on Saba, a tiny island about 30 miles from St. Marten. I stayed at El Momo Cottages, where friendly host Andries fixed a nice breakfast both mornings in a beautiful balcony overlooking the Caribbean. He was also helpful via email before my arrival in arranging travel to and from St. Marten. There isn't much to do on Saba other than hike to the top of Mt. Scenery, for more great views of the sea. One word of warning: it's a steep hike from the road to the cottages, and to the property from downtown. You have to be in good shape.

El Momo is a wonderful place. What it lacks in luxury it more than makes up in beauty and service. A great value for the price and a ten minute walk from town, Andries and company made us feel very welcome. Breakfast and the dinner he cooked were outstanding, the views are spectacular and the service attentive and light hearted.

We really loved this place. In response to some of the complaints below. Yes, there are steps (lots) but Andries will definitely carry your bags up for you. He carried ours all the way to the top cottage. Just turn around and look at the view when you get to the top. It makes the climb worth it every time.

True, it's not "Marriot" spotless but hardly "Filthy" and actually pretty amazingly clean considering it is mostly outside at the edge of the rainforest - there really are very few bugs in Saba. New England forests in summer have many more biting and crawling insects. Andries and team do a great job keeping the place neat and clean.

One thing to keep in mind is that Saba isn't the Carribean that most people picture. It's a European mountain village thrown into a tropical climate. So dont go expecting the resort atmosphere. The hiking is incredible around the whole island. The Mountain is great but all the trails around the island are really beautiful. The island is also so safe and friendly. There are few places left in the world like Saba. It's a place where you can have true peace of mind.

Room Tip: Go for the Cottage in the Sky - worth it

As you're climbing and climbing, the owner doesn't help with your bags at the top, instead he claps his hands with mocking glee "you're almost there" and out of breath, he doesn't even reach out to give a hand with bags. And that's just to the office level and the beginning of the nightmare. The bed was so worn out, the kitchenette is scary, the pool is DISGUSTING, the plywood floor in the room filthy and bug-ridden, as is the broken toilet with loose worn-out seat and nasty smell.
The guy is friendly until you notice any problem, then treats you with contempt like you don't matter because you aren't some grateful backpacker that doesn't know any better.
At 8am the owner tells the nice guy that does all the work there to use a loud saw or sander right outside our window. I said something to him and he told me that he thought since everyone goes diving he just assumed we were gone. He knew we are not divers and that we were up late buying his beer. He has an excuse for everything, but really he doesn't want to spend one cent on the place, or do any real work himself. If ever there was a guy in the wrong business, it is this guy. If this pool was somewhere else, the Health Department would shut it down, it a festering disease hole with floating dead bugs among the FILTH in the murky gray water. Considering the lack of decent flooring, paint, and cleaning supplies, el Momo is not cheap at all.
He can't call for reservations for you because the people on the island don't like him. or maybe its a lie and he just wont spare the phone call.
It such a shame because it could be cute clean cottages up a hundred steps instead, and then it would be special. I hesitated before writing a bad review, but its so much more than just a place I wouldn't go back to. I have never imagined a worse hotelier.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

I stayed in the cricket cottage, one of the cheaper options in el momo and probably on the island of Saba, but even then I got a great view of the ocean plus sunrise and sunset. Laid back atmosphere perfect for a getaway in the Caribbean, especially with Andries as your host! Simple, basic accommodation. Do note that el momo is situated on a hill away from Windwardside village where shops and restaurants are.
