“Location, location!!”
Reviewed 4 March 2012

We just returned from a weeklong trip to the Long Bay resort on Tortola. When selecting our hotel we really studied these trip advisor reviews, so its only right to pay it forward so to speak!
Overall, we really had a fantastic time. The resort really delivers in regards to beachfront location, on Long Bay which is really once of the nicest and most pristine beaches on the West End of Tortola. Our room was literally steps from the water and sand, we could enjoy a cocktail on our private terrace and watch the waves crash. Another perk of the resort was the pool. I noticed that not many people commented on really how large and nicely landscaped the pool and surrounding areas are. Mostly we prefer to swim in the ocean, but the pool was really nicer than I expected. The swim up pool bar was really convenient too, we enjoyed many painkillers and mahi sandwiches poolside for lunch :-) The bartender/ chef was a character- she was not the most outwardly friendly, but I didnt mind so much. Her attitude reminded me of a diner waitress, kind of a "what'll ya have" sort of treatment.

However, the room itself did leave some to be desired. The bathroom toilet area was like a tiny closet and in need of updating. The same with the shower, although large it had a old shower head and actually there was no door or curtain on the shower. So basically you are showering out in the open kind of behind a wall. The bathroom area did have two slatted doors you could close but it did seem odd. The TV in the room had terrible reception and we only got a handful of channels. We probably could have complained but we didnt mind, we didnt want to watch too much TV anyway. The room also had a small bar sink and fridge, which was good for storing water and drinks.

I also enjoyed a massage in the spa- its a very small little spa but the massage was good and reasonably priced. It did not have sauna/ steam rooms etc- so I would say it was pretty basic.

While traveling we really enjoy eating at the local restaurants. We had breakfast daily at the hotel which was sufficient- nothing fantastic, except the dining area is on the beach which was nice. We had dinner one night at the "Pasta House" they have on site, it was nothing too memorable. We had much better meals all around the west side of the island- Jolly Roger, Sugar Mill and drinks at Bananakeet were great.

We are a couple in our early 30's and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the resort- for the most part the other guests I would say ranged from 40's- 70's. It really is not a "party" atmosphere so to speak- not like an adult all-inclusive vibe. We enjoyed that it was quiet and tranquil, and could have drinks at the hotel pool and listen to the reggae music. We also did not see many children on the resort.

Customer service was fine- we found ourselves a little frustrated that the Concierge service was not really in place, usually at hotels you hope the Concierge can give you some real details about the restaurants in the area, usually we were met with little information.

Taxi's get very expensive on the island. You really cannot walk to many restaurants from the hotel, so be prepared to spend at least $20 every time you take a ride. We rented a car for one of the days to explore the island, which was great. The roads are windy and narrow but it wasnt a problem. When we go back we would probably rent a car for a longer period of time. Road Town is pretty far away and would have been a $60 cab ride (!) So we passed on that.

Overall, I have high marks for Long Bay Resort. I think its important to stress, this is not a posh, luxury style resort, like the Ritz Carlton for example. They do not have waitress service for drinks on the beach, or go that extra mile in regards to customer service. Dining options are not fancy, its a more casual vibe. As I mentioned, the room was in need of some modernization, but it was clean and adequate for us. The real beauty of the resort is the location, that beach is amazing!

After reading some of the reviews, we decided to select Long Bay for our honeymoon, and the experience was memorable, pleasant and we are making plans to return! The staff was very amicable! Upon arriving, they welcomed us withcold towels and rum punch! The Hillside deluxe room had a beautiful view! The room was clean, neat and very very nice! The beach is clean, clear and very romantic! We were able to take Speedys ferry to visit Virgin Gorda, took a day sail with White Squall II, took ferry to Jost Van Dyke, shopped at Road Town, tried local rum at Pussers, and had breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant 1748! This place is beautiful and we highly recommend it! The staff as a whole was the best always ready to help and did it with a smile. The standout on the staff was Vernon, one of the managers. A genuinely nice guy and always willing to help. We definately feel the resort is better because of him and will continue to improve. Thank you Vernon for everything!! Note: during high season, taxifares are quite expensive so renting a car would definately be a good thing.

Room Tip: Hillside Deluxe rooms have wonderful views. It does involve some uphill walking but the views are w...

We stayed at a beach side cabana this time. The front of the cabana has a balcony that faces right on the beach. You can lie in bed and watch the waves. Its a fantastic mesmerising spot.
The down side of these expensive rooms are the bathrooms. The back of the cabana house a sort of bathroom which is awful for the price of the room. The toilet flapper didnt work and there was some leaking from the tank. Wetf loors. The bathrooms in all the cabanas are sub standard. Disappointing but manageble due to the fabulous spot.
They also demanded full payment when I booked the room. Something I havent seen in a while.

My family spent a week at Long Bay second week of February, celebrating two birthdays. Ours was a return trip, originally staying and Long Bay ten years ago. Still a most beautiful location and a stunning beach - surely one of the most scenic and walkable beaches in the Carribbean.
Not great for swimming except in certain places due to submerged rocks. Our rooms were poolside oceanview, and were perfect for our circumstances with immediate access to the pool, spa, and tennis courts. No crowds at the hotel, or really anywhere on Tortola. Many folks would likely prefer the ocean-front rooms and villas since they are situated right on the beach. Poolside rooms suited us for this particular trip. Rooms further up the hill would require more strenuous walking.
Flew into St. Thomas and took ferry to West End. Long Bay is right over the hill - very accessible to ferry and restaurants at West End. Fortunately the beach and weather were delightful; the resort maybe a little disappointing. Many of the things we noticed on our first Long Bay vacation were still evident - probably not worse, but the same. Most of the resort is in need of detailing - lighting, grounds maintenance, room cleanliness. None of these things decreased our enjoyment, but for a place with so much potential, it is odd that more attention is not given to making it really first class. Our room was nicely if modestly furnished; bathroom was passable; shower was dingy, but could have easily been cleaned.
Maid attention to detail and suggestion from us was ignored, or almost chillingly received.
But my most negative comment would have to be the attendant at pool bar. The lady in charge was unbelievably unfriendly - almost hostile in waiting, serving, answering questions.
She opened late, did not offer any information, never smiled, and was certainly unwelcoming to any customer. Everyone around the pool noticed it. That being said, she did serve good drinks and cooked great pool fare.
We dined at the resort restaurant three nights - and the food was relatively expensive, but very good. Service was a little hit-or-miss, but our last evening could not have been better.
Reception personnel were smiling and helpful.
Renting a car is highly recommended; but be ready for steep hills, hairpin curves, etc. Driving, especially at night can be daunting. But the car will allow access to other restaurants, visits to Road Town for ferry service to other islands or sailing excursions, and importantly seeing Smugglers Cove - a beautiful bay adjacent to Long Bay - calm, very swimable water - good snorkeling directly off the beach. Too far to walk - thus having a car is important. Two car rental agencies (both national brands) are on site at the hotel.
A great trip; an enjoyable beach vacation - and a good hotel. It could be better. We plan to return again.

Room Tip: Poolside oceanview for those wanting quick access to the pool, pool bar, spa. Others may prefer oce...

I had read mixed reviews on TripAdvisor, so I was a little worried, but was pleasantly surprized when we arrived! We had a room that overlooked the ocean. It was very nice and clean and we had a nice deck looking out at Jost Van Dyke. The front desk staff was very prompt and pleasant with check in. The resort was quiet the week we were there, which was nice for us. We ate at the restaurant at the beach (1812?) many times out of convenience. The service was adequate and the food was OK. I had a problem with my back and went for massages at the spa 3 of the days at the resort. The massages were excellent and saved the vacation. I was able to do more activities b/c of them. After day two we decided to rent a car to explore and find more restaurants etc. We ate at a new Natural Food restaurant beyond Road Town which was very good and extremely clean. We stopped at Cane Garden Bay and relaxed for a bit, one of the few beaches we found that had little surf. We also sought out the Banana Keet Cafe on the advice of a friend and had a drink. The location was beautiful and we went back the next night for dinner. The dinner was the best we had on our trip and the drink ( Bananakeet) was great. Got the recipe to bring home with us. They also turned us on to a breakfast place on Frenchman's Cay called D'First Cup. Their food was excellent and the people were very friendly. Our stay on Tortola was good, in that we found the resort nice and the scenery was beautiful. We did feel that a good percentage of the people on Tortola were not terribly friendly. It was a very different feeling that we didn't really enjoy. I doubt we would go back again but we are glad we at least tried it out.
