Beware Attack Dogs. Three German Shepards live in the building that’s closest to the mill,, along one of the paths up. The only sign around says “drive slow please”. They bark, wag their tails, and attack. The have collars, work together and seem to be trained. One bit my leg and started yanking the other two went to my opposite sides. I imagine how ugly it would have been if the first had pulled me down off my feet. The place is gorgeous, the inside still has the request for donations on upkeep. I didn’t expect to bleed for the experience. There’s still signs around talking about what you’re seeing, but some are on the ground. It almost looks like whoever’s fixing the closest building is using the attack dogs as a guard, but they’re free-ranging onto the approach paths.
I am already booking a trip back to Rust Op Twist this spring. The property is filled with history, the sound of the surf, the magical water, brain coral littering the beach... the sugar mill and ruins have the same paths walked by those who worked there hundreds of years earlier. The cottage is a perfect island home, quiet, bright, and a great place to escape to. We did yoga up at the sugar mill every morning - jt was incredible. The hosts are an amazing family who are eager to share the beautiful history of the property with you.
I highly recommend this property.
Having been to St Croix several times(third trip), we wished to get up close to a piece of History. This trip, we sought out and visited the Rust Op Twist Sugar Mill. It is on private property, but we learned that they do allow the public to visit. The sights from this magnificent structure are awesome and we took this opportunity to take several photos(which will be included in our family Christmas card this year). We strongly recommend a visit to this Mill on your next visit to STX!
There's a chain on the road with a no trespassing sign. Too bad, I'm sure it would provide for a nice view and picture opportunity toward Cane Bay. It's not near the house, so I don't know why they wouldn't allow folks to just walk up to this, take a few pictures, and leave. But it's their property, so I guess that's their right.
This sugar mill is on private property. Up until the original owners died, they had graciously allowed tourists to visit. Now, though, there is an ongoing family feud over the ownership of the property, and the heirs have posted "Private Property: No Trespassing" signs on both roads that lead up to the ruins.
Sorry. You'll have to find another set of ruins, but there are plenty.
WE drove up to this place and spent a lovely time exploring it. Not much do to except wander around the ruins, but the place gives you a great perspective of the history of the island. Keep in mind the access road is a dirt road although the car can go up to the mill ruins.
